The MPAA’s suit against TorrentSpy is currently ongoing. In May, Cooper ordered TorrentSpy to begin saving IP addresses and download activity of its U.S. based users as part of pre-trial discovery. TorrentSpy responded by blocking American users – a move later mirrored by several other popular torrent sites – citing privacy concerns.

That explains it.  Thanks for this info.  The torrent search site I use now is isohunt.com.  Even they do some blocking now, but only on the torrents that they publish themselves.

It also probably explains how Comcast got the opportunity to send me a couple of nasty-grams when I was in NY last year.  Torrentspy was my main source of torrents then.  They're damaged goods.  I'd been hoping they'd unblock at some point.  Not anymore.

How can the actions of the MPAA and this Anderson guy be construed as legal?  What he did was basically identity theft not to mention the initial hacks.  Are the courts now saying hacking is legal as long as it is part of the fight against intellectual property piracy?

You're assuming that there's still justice in this country.  When laws are written by corporations and rubber-stamped by the legislature, there is no hope of that.

Cobra, don't be so cynical. This is a democracy. If the majority of people think that something should be a certain way, that's the way it is. Meanwhile, I will let my uninterrupted downloading of music and movies speak for me.

Keep bending over, folks.  Keep bending over . . .

I have to agree with Cobra on this one.

I think the problem is indifference. Perhaps the problem is people don't seem to care about something unless they are directly affected by it. I still think the US of A is probably one of the best places in the world to live in. Freedom of speech to me is one of the most important fundamental rights of human beings. Why the hell don't Americans exercise this right more often?

Again... I am not anti American... I am not. It may seem like it every time I make a negative comment, but its just some observations I make. BTW, that human rights issue we err..discussed a bit ago is obviously far worse here. That's a story I'll tell another day.

Anyway during my days on IGN, I posted a thread that turned very spicy fast. I am sure some of you remember it. Five years ago I was basically asking why America despite being one of the richest nations had one of the poorest health care systems among its peers, and a pre college education system that in terms of quality ranked worse than many third world nations.

It got spicy quickly, but I posted numerous links that I am not going to bother looking for now. Basically America is below a lot of third world nations in terms of how educated its high school goers are. In fact it had about fifty nations ahead of it. This was according to numerous surveys and reports from many American government agencies as well as reports from the United Nations.

That was one thing. The other was regarding health care. I found that the health care in Canada was even better than the one available to Americans. Xessive can testify that the health care in the middle east is amazing as well. Same goes for much of Europe, where like much of the middle east, it is FREE and fast.

At the time I stated that this was due to private corporations getting their hands on health care. A lot of people seemed to agree with me, though many didn't.

Again, these are just a couple of observations on my part. Yes there is a lot of corruption in America on a higher level. Big businesses backed by major money, finance the campaign of politicians who in turn return the favor.

Yes America is still the leading nation, but it needs to work a few things out.

Despite having all this wealth, and despite being one of the few nations that allows complete freedom to its citizens, nations that are far less wealthy are still better at providing health care, and better at providing education.

Education and health care are the building blocks of any world power. Something is definitely not right, and American citizens need to start asking questions.

The other thing I notice is how public opinion is bought. News organizations seem to present views that seem to be backed by special interest groups. Guests that are on the payroll of these groups seem to get a lot more airtime.

The problem with the corruption in America is that unlike here, it is subtle and hard to prove, yet at the same time it is very obvious.

Again I am not anti American. I am not making these observations because of my bias or anything. Like I said, I see more corruption in other parts of the world.

That was inspired.  I don't see how anyone could consider you anti-American for exposing our insidious ills so eloquently.  Pugnate for President!  Woo!

lol Idol.

I also saw that other thread about America peaking. It seems to me that a few of you are depressed about the state of affairs, and I have to say that despite her problems America is still good to her people.

I am just wondering about one thing. It seems that Hilary Clinton will win the elections, and it just worries me that either a Bush or a Clinton have shaped America for the last twenty years, and perhaps for another eight? That's definitely odd, but more than that, its unhealthy.

This election is going to...interesting. We've got a woman running and a black guy, both are getting all hyped up. The problem is a lot of people will be voting on them because they either want a woman president or a black president...not whether they think they will actually do a good job as president.

People are taking voting for the American President the same as they vote for American Idol.

Pugnate, you hit the nail on the head pretty much.  I think Americans see the problems and are frustrated by them, but not enough until it really affects their lives personally.  There doesn't seem to be any visible, vocal rebels championing the cause and until there is I think Americans as a whole are content to sit on the couch, thinking "This sucks."

I think a lot of the problem lies with Congress. They get nothing done, and people are unwilling to take a stand and vote someone else into office.

Is it indifference? I don't know. But there certainly hasn't been anyone inspirational in office for a long time.

Also, Colbert '08 baby.

Idol summed up my thoughts quite nicely.  And I doubt anybody would disagree with what Pug said, either.
