Topic: Anyone know anyone affected by all the fires?

Major stuff down in So Cal right now with all the fires. Looking at the maps, it almost looks like there isn't a single place that doesn't have something going on near it.

Aimee's talking to her parents right now. Their home is in the evacuation area, but they're in Los Vegas right now. I don't know if that's good timing or bad timing. You know? Her sister's at UCI right now and I think I just heard Aimee said that she might be evacuated as well.

My brother's at UCI right now.  He was evacuated from his dorm this morning.  And there was a fire contained a couple miles near my friend's house.  A friend's relative just bought a house up on Topanga near PCH.  They've had to leave, too.  Sad too, they just bought the house and fixed it up not a couple of months ago.

But that really sucks.  It seems like that crap is happening down there a hell of a lot lately.  I guess the lack of rainfall is really giving us a once-over.  Not only do we get a drought, we also get to watch our houses burn down.

California sucks.

I have a lot of family in San Diego, and my brother-in-law's guard unit just got called up to help with the fires.

Why do people live in California?  Wildfires, landslides, earthquakes, weirdos...

Seriously though, it sounds pretty bad.  When the main story on the front page of The Cincinnati Enquirer talks about the wildfires, you know its serious.  My thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected directly or indirectly.

300,000 people are now evacuated because of the fires according to the NYT. That's insane. I hope that everyone is o.k. that lives around there.

yes.. have relatives in CA..checking how it's going.. father-in-law of my aunt isn't in great shape, fires and alzhiemers isn't a great mix.

Well, good news. I guess the fire went north around their house for a little, so they made it through okay.

I'm sure there's something about the fire being held back long enough for that north movement to occur, but that's not something they know about just now You know? I figured their home was as good as gone by this late afternoon the way the news was going.

yeah 40 people from my high school (including me, which is weird because we're all norcal) are attending uc irvine right now. i could tell something was up when in the early afternoon i opened up my windows and huge gusts of wind blew in. all my light stuff flew across the room including papers, pencilholders etc. it was my first experience with the santa ana winds but i still had no idea that the wind was also being caused by wildfires.

then dusk came. i remember the first night of the fire our sky was blanketed black like there were huge storm clouds brewing overhead (thats what i thought at first, until i saw the red glow in the distance). later on the moon turned red and ashes were raining down from the sky. my dorm window was open all afternoon so when i got back there was some ashes in my room which we vacuumed. some people complained of stomachaches but i only felt a little lightheaded from the bad air. we didnt change the air until tuesday, which meant that we were living off three-day old stale air. it was hot as hell and everyone felt tired.

on monday the temperature was 94 degrees outside and almost 100 degrees at john wayne airport which is about 3 miles away.

air throughout this week has not been good. monday through wednesday the air was a grey haze and you couldnt really see off in the distance. since we get hot weather as well it was really smoky and stuffy when walking outside. some people wore bandanas and others wore sars masks. yesterday night the moon was still orange.

right now its clearing up. we had completely clear skies for the first time in a week and we cant smell the smoke any more.

the people at ucsd have it a lot worse though. about 100 people from my high school go there and most of them evacuated voluntarily to go back to home in northern california. at sd the fires were only about 5-10 miles away so they could catch ash in their hands.

i have a few pics of the ashes in the sky as reflected upon by the streetlights. might also be some pics of the moon but ill have to check.
