Bought Pro Slouch...
« on: Tuesday, March 11, 2008, 10:45:20 AM »
http://www.proslouch.com/

My 16 year old brother put this together. It is the earliest stage of what it will look like. I hope to have Xessive (who is a professional web designer) handle the look, while my bro can code the structure. So yes, it doesn't look anything, but this is after a few hours of messing around. I appreciate my brother working with me with enthusiasm. :)

On the main page we can have RSS FEEDS from Kotaku, Gamasutra and Joystiq under NEWS, kinda like this website I write for: www.gamer20.com

Maybe I can even link the forums to OVERWRITTEN if Antares doesn't mind, or doesn't think its inappropriate etc.

So yes... position for EiC is open haha. :P

And thus, many of us move on to our sixth forum (if my count is right)

No Kams, I think we are happily posting at OW.net forums. :) There will be no moving.

To be honest I like OW as our club, where any new member is a personal invite (K-Man for instance). I've been active on a few other forums, and I am glad a bulk of those posters aren't here. That may sound a touch arrogant, but have a look at the Penny Arcade forums. Any topic gets a 100 replies a minute, and most thoughts get lost in the shuffle. I don't know... I guess OW just feels more personal. I like coming back here after hitting up the other forums.

But yea, my brother has his exams coming, and Xessive has a lot of work, but he apparently has been working on a layout, so I am looking forward to that.

I had some questions, that hopefully someone here has the answers to. Firstly, I want the RSS feeds to open on the main page as news items, kinda like here:

http://www.gamer20.com/

My brother said he'll need to learn how to do that. He said something about PHPs. Does anyone know any decent tutorials on this?

Secondly, whats a good program to handle the administration? Someone that allows editors to login, post reviews, articles etc. ?

Pug, that was just the rub with OW and why it's still not materialized as a true site.  The forum setup, administration, and customization is a breeze compared to the CMS systems.  I've got a few installed on my web server at home to play around with, but frankly they are a bitch.  Especially finding themes for them.  Generally the free ones have some sort of watermark that pretty much mean you have to pay for an upgraded version without looking very unprofessional.  Other places make you subscribe to get the themes, like RocketTheme.  It's all fairly expensive.

I've been toying with the theme aspects of CMS systems (primarily Drupal). I understand it would take time and a lot of effort, but couldn't we make a theme?

I'm sure you could... not me.  I don't know PHP, and I'm not a designer.  But yeah if you want to mess around with stuff, you are definitely welcome.

I haven't seen Drupal, just Wordpress, Joomla!, and Mambo.

I think that forum was phpBB, but I don't remember.  The front page seemed home-made based on how horrible it looked.  But I never posted any content so I don't know if it was based on a CMS backbone or what.

Wait...I though K-Man was kamloops, but now I see that's Ace_o_spades. This changes everything.
