Que and Idol play Guild Wars, screens to prove it.
« on: Wednesday, December 26, 2007, 09:55:27 PM »
So yes, here are some of the early adventures of the amazing Lifesteak Sandwich guild with its two members (we sort of have 3, but Pyro hasn't really played with us yet).  View actual screens to avoid shitty forum resize making them look like crap.

Yes, this game is pretty.

Dungeons are pretty too.

There are some entertaining NPCs out in the world.

Dangerous area in the early portion of the game has a neat red sky.  I know, where's the combat?  I'm getting to it.

Wintersday in post-searing Ascalon!  Fun bonus stuff there, and some random crap like fighting with other people over gifts and a huge snowball fight PvP match which I tried twice and totally lost.

The game is really neat because it actually feels like a more traditional game in terms of plot.  This is initially apparent when the world you get to know early on takes a drastic turn for the worse.  Familiar places become shadows of their former selves.

No idea where these guys came from.  Idol (that's him in the corner... yes, we're both playing chicks... shut up) and I were fighting, then suddenly these soldier guys just tagged along.  We eventually took them somewhere and they dropped off with a commander.  It was kinda' neat.

Finally, combat!  These guys are bad, apparently.  They sort of, you know, destroyed your entire civilization.

Heh, I wasn't supposed to be here.  I was supposed to be running my ass off but instead I kinda' hung back to take pictures.  It fucked up a cutscene shortly thereafter, which amused me greatly.  But I got some great shots out of it.

More combat!

Another cool wilderness shot (Me: "OH ITS PRETTY LEMME TAKE A PIC" - Idol: " ... I hate you.").

Sometimes it isn't just pretty, it's epic as hell.

Scary dungeons?  Check.

Sorry about the overall lack of combat shots.  Check actual screens (not resized forum screens) for much better images (1280x1024).

It should be noted that this game runs like a dream.  I've got everything cranked plus 4xAA and maybe some AF, and my fps is 60 almost all the time.  Even when it slows down in towns with tons of models, it never gets below 40.  And my system doesn't run any other game like that.  At all.

Honestly, this game is really great.  I'm having a lot more fun than I expected to.  I'm ending this thread now because I'm going to go play more.  I'll be taking more screens, which I won't post.  I have almost 400 already, so you're getting a rather small bit of what I've actually taken.

If I had a better Internet connection I'd be playing Guild Wars. For the last 2 years I've been contemplating buying it, but I never had either the time or connection speed.

Seriously? How well does it run?

I can barely play any of my multiplayer games. I played some Team Fortress 2 with GPW the other day, and the fastest ping I had was ~350. There was noticeable lag but I managed to get a few kills ;D

Suppose I do pick up GW, which one should I go for? Original? Factions? Nightfall? Eye of the North?

All I have is the original, so... that's all I can speak to now.  But it's sure a good time so far.  It's not that any one thing is the best thing ever, but all the little things that make games like this fun are there, and it has a few unique twists that improve it beyond that I think.  Plus it's free to play!  The plot isn't particularly amazing so far, but the atmosphere they give along with it works really nicely.  Most fantasy games make "war" feel kind of small and dumb... this really feels big and like a proper war.  And it's cool that you can do missions to advance the plot, complete with cutscenes and such.  Even if they aren't the best things you've ever seen, they really do add some spice that makes the rest of it feel more relevant.

I'm sure idol will post about dialup stuff shortly.

The game runs quite well on dialup, actually. You lag a bit in the major cities since theres so many people, but in the explorable areas and the smaller outposts everything is pretty smooth since its all instanced. A little jump here and there but completely playable. This isnt so much a game about reactions than using your head and using your skills at the right time for the situation. I'm playng a monk/mesmer (well, monk since so far I havent used any mesmer skills), which means Im a healer. When I panic and shit gets out of hand we die. If I stay calm its surprising how well Im able to keep us going.

I'd definitely try it. They offer 10 day/14 hour trials or whatever. Heck, I just got a trial key in Eye of the North if you need one. I believe it lets you try all the expansions too. Just remember, the begining areas are kinda slow to get you used to the game. Later stuff is much much cooler/more challenging. And the Missions (as opposed to quests) are story based with cutscenes and cool moments in them. Definitely try them.

As for which to get...hard to say. Prophecies is fun and seems to contain the main storyline. It kind of has a neat fantasy look with some cool monsters and stuff. Mostly typical classes (ranger, monk, warrior, elementalist (mage) necromancer, mesmer (a odd sort of class). Factions is asian/chinese themed with its cities and player models. You get the base classes from Prophecies, plus 2 new ones (assassin and ritualist). I read it was the weaker of the expansions. Nightfall is african themed, again base classes and 2 new ones (dervish and paragon). This rated very well and would be a good start I suppose. It introduces Heros to go with henchmen. Henchmen fill out our group when you solo or only have a few players. Heros do the same, but they have better AI, you can outfit them with weapons and choose what skills they use. All the campaigns offer new skills to every class.

Those are all stand alone games, you can buy and play any of them. Eventually you can take the character you made in one and travel to the lands of the others. Eye of the North is the only true "expansion". It requires you own one of the first 3 games. It continues the story started in Prophecies, so you might want to play that before you get it. You also need to have a level 20 character to go play the expansion content. I just picked it up today and dont have a level 20, so I cant really comment on whats included.

Just remember, its more about smartly using your skills than your upber level, weapons, and armor. Dont grind to get XP to level because tis not really as important here.

Those are definitely fake. The shadows are all wrong.

Buy yeah - now that I've stated the obligatory response that the title demanded, that looks very fun. And sexy.

The game looks pretty good, but since I'm addicted to World of Warcraft, I will probably never end up playing Guild Wars.

Guild Wars: Prophecies 14-Day Trial from Fileplanet!

I thought some of y'all (who haven't played GW) might be interested too!

I'm having a few issues getting the trial code right now, so I'm gonna try again a little later.

It's been a while since I played either Prophecies or Nightfall.

My copy of Eye of the North is on its way.

I eventually want to pick up Factions.
