Who has big plans for the weekend? Christmas?
« on: Friday, December 21, 2007, 04:34:41 PM »
I've got to work both Monday and Tuesday, and no family in town this weekend, so I plan to spend most of the weekend studying and drinking (hopefully in that order).  Monday and Tuesday should be really relaxed, and I'll get paid double for both days, so I can't complain too much.  I'll really miss being away from home for christmas. This will be the first time I haven't spend christmas with my mom, sister, grandma and more recently my neice and nephew.  Next weekend I'm going to Phoenix to visit my dad, but he doesn't celebrate christmas much so it will probably be more like going over there for dinner.

What are everyone's plans for the holiday?  I'm assuming most places are giving both monday and tuesday as holidays off right?

hmm.. like you, am away from home. Not sure yet how Christmas is going to be spent.  Whether alone or not, I'm going to cook up a little Christmas meal...  I'm moving in to a new apartment today so, going to be busy with that the next few days.

no gifts this year i guess.

I'm driving to Long Island, NY tomorrow.  Going to spend Christmas with my girls.  It looks like the weather is going to cooperate just long enough.  I still have to pack, though I have everything I need already lined up.

How long is the drive to NY?

It's 11-12 hours.  The time I leave is the time I get there, only AM instead of PM.  Ha.  It's weird how time flows at a variable rate during long-ass drives.  The first 3 hours or so seem to take as long as the last 8.  I guess you just get into a bit of a stupor, where most of your mind goes into standby.  That's assuming low traffic, which is why I like to drive late at night (especially in NY).

going to be pretty a pretty intoxicated weekend, i reckon. got a mate's birthday tomorrow which is combined with meeting up with some friends from out of town. on sunday i'm meeting up with a different set of friends who are back to see their families for christmas. christmas eve is traditionally a big drinking night with my friends round here, but i might give it a miss this time. several years of staggering round to my parents early christmas morning only to be used as a human climbing frame by my nieces, then forcing down christmas dinner while trying not to vomit has led me to believe christmas eve is not a drinking night. either way, it should be an expensive weekend.

on christmas day the family are all heading to one of my brothers, which might actually be okay. my brothers are both lapsed gamers, so i'm going to try and initiate a bit of singstar and guitar hero. watching my dad try karaoke should be pretty funny. if i'm lucky we might get some poker going too - last year i won, and took a great amount of shameless pleasure in taking my dad and brother's money, then drunkenly mocking them in their defeat. might be a bit more difficult to convince them it's a good idea this year...

Working Christmas Eve, then going to dinner at the in laws.  They're a bit miffed because apparently they didn't realize I was working and so planned dinner for 3.  Whoops.  No idea what made them think my job is cool enough to give me fucking time off.  Christmas I do have off, at least, so I'll head to mom's place in the morning for breakfast with her, the wife, my sister, her husband, and my little niece and nephew.  Then we just screw around until dinner, have dinner (I don't know where... probably just separate), then it's dessert at my aunt's giant house an hour or so away.  Dessert, family, gift exchange, whatever, then back home to pass out or, more likely, play video games until my eyes fall out.  Then it's back to work for the rest of the damned week where I'll practically be alone since everyone else took time off but I can't because they all buy back an extra 2 weeks vacation from the department which I can't do because I can't afford it.  And yes, I'm fucking bitter about it.  They get double what I do every year because they have spouses or boyfriends who make as much or more than they do (which is already a good chunk of change).

Aside from the bitterness of working, though, I'm happy about it.  Looking very forward to spending time with family.  My mom, sister, and the niece and nephew came out to surprise me at work today, which was fun.  Got to show them around the building and stuff since they haven't seen it and its about to close in a few months.

Big plans are in affect as of last night. I did the midnight run from the Bay Area to Southern California to be with the family and got in at 4am. I hung out mostly with my brother today and we went to see I Am Legend. Tomorrow I go to San Diego and see Aimee for the first time in a couple weeks (she went on a big trip with her family) and then back here for the rest of Christmas.

The real plan is to convince Aimee that she's spent enough time with her family for the past couple weeks and that she needs to spend Christmas with me for the first time ever. I doubt it'll work because she has to fly back to Oakland for work all fast right as Christmas ends and her tickets probably have her flying out of San Diego.

I know the feeling.  It's almost like it isn't really christmas.  How is the new apartment?

It's a little on the cold side because of marble flooring.. worst flooring for winter IMO..  the apartment in it's entirety is a little rundown but all it needs is some cleaning/transformation ala awesome interiors.. it's fully furnished.. Actually, there's too much furniture it's driving me crazy.  I'm still setting up the internet connections, should be set up by monday..

Let me rant about the bathroom.. i HATE IT...  I'm particular about bathrooms but i guess i just have to live with it.

I'm going to buy some paintings and nice tapestry or something to beautify the place. I guess that's how i'll spend Christmas.. setting up an apartment I won't be in very long.

I'm basically just hanging out with family and friends. My family is great, though, and I always look forward to this time of year. Fun times had by all.

Sorry about the bathroom Raisa. The bathroom at my place is massive - almost as big as my room. It echos. It's a little excessive, but I got used to it. :D

I know the shitty feeling.  In another 5 months I'll be setting a personal record by moving FOUR TIMES in a little over a year, and I hate moving.  I can't seem to motivate myself to even finish unpacking here since I know I won't be here much longer.

It's nice to know i'm not the only one!  I've moved more than 12 times this year.  And because of that, I'm actually thinking that it would be nice to settle down???  But then again, I don't know if I CAN handle that.

I would try fit everything into one big suitcase and have that and my laptop bag. But then this last time, I  just gave up and brought a little suitcase, a backpack and my laptop bag.  I sold most of my clothes.. And now i just have several pairs of thermals, three pairs of pants, a skirt, a basic black dress, 3-4 tops, 1 pair of sweat pants, 2 sweaters and 1 coat.

I'm getting a little lonesome thinking of Christmas. :( Hope you guys are having fun!

Well, I'm here.  Got in last night at about 1:30 AM.  It only took 10.5 hours.  Long range on the rental Altima meant one gas stop, I had the cruise control set to 75 most of the way, and I tagged along behind some of the fast drivers after Pennsylvania.  This one guy was going close to 100 through New Jersey.  I guess he was trying to lose me, but instead made a wonderful front door.  The Altima rocks, except that it has *no antilock brakes* (isn't that illegal by now?) and like many cars, does just about all the stopping with the front wheels.  The emergency brake is a foot pedal (duh!) and so independent front/rear braking is much more difficult.  The first time I locked up the fronts was an outright shock.  I'm so used to my humble 13-year-old American pony car handling all braking situations just fine on its own.  After that, I knew what I had to do.  I remember very well POS brakes from my youth.

The car seems to have some sort of new transmission.  It's automatic, but when you punch it, the engine goes up to a fixed RPM and the car pulls very smoothly and briskly.  It's like infinitely-variable gearing (?).  But the weirdest thing is that there is no keyhole in the ignition.  You need to have this little transmitter (with the door and trunk unllock buttons) on you and put your foot on the brake.  Then you press a button on the dash.

Anyway, things here are OK.  The place is kind of chaotic because one of the things my ex does is pet sitting.  There's already a menagerie of animals here to begin with, and now there's a new dog she's watching who is roaming all over, getting into arguments with my girls' dog.  It's not too bad right now.  Let's see if that lasts.  My little one keeps growing.  She's noticeably bigger than when I saw her last in July.  She's always so happy to see me, and that's one joy I'm very grateful to have.

So, gotta go.  Things are happening.  Talk to you all soon.  Have a great holiday.

CVT = continuiously variable transmission.  I drove a car that had this when I was looking at cars a couple years ago.  It is definitely a strange feeling.  It almost feels like it doesn't matter how hard you push the gas, the car is going to accelerate as fast as it feels like.

Good to hear you're back with your family.

Thanks!  Went to see Enchanted yesterday with the girls.  It's the quintessential Que Disney nightmare, which means I liked it OK and the girls loved it.  We're going to spend Christmas eve with a smaller gathering than usual tonight.  It's also much closer than usual, and that I like.  I'm getting hungry for all the good food already.

CVT?  I had heard of such a thing a long time ago, but it never went anywhere.  Now it has, I guess.  It does feel like fly-by-wire.  You tell the car, "hey, move it!"  Then it quickly replies, "OK, let's see what I can do for you".  The lower part of the gearshift slot has a notch to the left.  Know what I mean?  There's P, R, N, D, and to the left of 'D' is a notch with an up position and a down position.  You can use this as a pseudo-manual gearshift.  If you pull it out of D down and to the left, the fixed RPM during acceleration get a good deal higher.  That must be the balls-to-the-wall setting.  I could get used to this, but I do prefer more direct control.

No girlfriend (currently my ex-girlfriend) around this year, so no big plans for X-Mas nor New Year's. Not like the plans were big last year, but I think they were better plans b/c she was actually in the equation; especially on New Year's.

I'm guessing X-Mas will be the usual assortment of Holiday stuff we do. Go to grandparents' house tomorrow for X-Mas, for one.

Hmmm....dunno' when I'm goin' to see my aunt's house -- usually go see her not too long after X-Mas, yearly...

Many people who say "X-mas" do so to remove Christ from the equation, being either anti-Christian or just uninterested in celebrating a Christian holiday.  Christians commonly believe this to be the only motivation as well, which is probably more true than not in our current day.  However, X has actually long been used as a symbol for Christ due to abbreviations of Christ's name in Greek (I couldn't give you dates, but we're talking many multiple hundreds of years), and the origins of the X-mas term and other similar abbreviations, few of which people use anymore, aren't recent at all, and were also commonly in use by Christians and others (X apparently replaced many "chris-" words quite commonly in ages past, even ones that had nothing to do with Christ).  The Chi-Rho, or labarum (☧), is a Christian symbol denoting the original "XP" abbreviation.

I actually had no idea. For some reason I don't think the majority do so to express political views. Most of my friends from the UK write "X-Mas", and I always naturally assumed they did it because it was a trendy short form. In fact I remember seeing it written as "X-Mas" in a lot children's books. I just find it hard to believe that so many people would be so silly to use it as some form of a political statement, but if they are, then it is quite dumb.

Yeah, that's what I understood too. Until I was invited to join a bible group (out of curiosity I decided to go) who informed me that some find it offensive.

Speaking of which, that "bible group" had some weird stuff goin' on. After a few days I realized I was amid a group called "The Word" who are apparently pretty hardcore, and they assign each member to a region of the world to spread the "Word," which they claimed was the "Truth," and even contested the local churches. Anyway, they kept trying to convert me even though I had explicitly said that I was just there as an observer, but I kinda expected it. One of them (the one who had originally invited) kept insisting that my heritage was Christian because I was always very polite whenever she encountered me in the building and that she couldn't believe I am a Muslim nor comprehend why I wouldn't take on their faith "You must believe so you can be saved!" to which I often replied "I do, just not the way you do."

All the while I was kinda hoping someone would mention weird "fishpeople" (a la Call of Cthulhu) so I could dedicate myself to writing my memoirs :P Anyway, by the time Christmas came around they started taking the hint and I was pretty much off the hook. I went back to my regular Christian friends, we celebrated, and I thanked God that I didn't get sucked into something freaky-deaky.

I would think Bible groups would always have weird things going on.  Most of the time, they use the wrong translation of the Bible.  it's sad.

As far as X-mas.. It's just wrong:
1. Removing Christ from Christmas takes the whole meaning of Christmas away.  It's like garlic bread without the garlic.  That's a really bad example but yeah.  Without Christ, there wouldn't be Christmas.

2. X - signifying the cross.. That's another thing.  I was never into the crosses..  why glorify THAT, or have reminders about that around?  I like churches but i hate seeing the crosses.

Without Christ, there wouldn't be Christmas.
apart from the fact that it was originally the winter solstice, a pagan festival that the christians highjacked, and that jesus was thought to be born sometime in the spring.

Re: Who has big plans for the weekend? Christmas?

Well no, I'm not religious. Not Athiest, but Agnostic.

So, really????
Wow, that is very interesting to know.

Thanks for sharing that, bro.

The Chi-Rho, or labarum (☧), is a Christian symbol denoting the original "XP" abbreviation.
Oh God....please don't tell me that's one reference Microsoft is getting at, by shortening Windows Experience (OS) name to its name of Windows XP...

Microsoft ain't no savior...  ???

To me it was always simply an abbreviation, with 'X' being a symbol for "Christ".  Whether that comes from ☧ ("Chi Rho" or "XP") or simply the form of the cross is no big deal to me.  It's not meant to be offensive, and the people I know who are offended are fundamentalists (i.e., extremists).
