jesus pug, let it go!

it's not dead - pc sales (in general) just aren't as strong as console sales. stop being such a whiny fanboy!

the original half-life and half-life 2 (original xbox), sold like crap on the consoles. it's a pc game through and through, and most of it's fans are obviously going to be pc gamers. it's kind of like saying, "sports team A's jerseys sold better in sports team A's hometown than sports team B's did - therefore sports team A are more popular".

Yea I know. :P I was just posting a news item. My comment was tongue in cheek.

edit:

It actually sold the bulk of the 1.5 million on the 360, while about 200,00 on the PS3. Apparently they did a horrible job of porting it to the PS3.

yeah, yeah. fanboy.

and yes. the ps3 port was horrible. 5 second load times on 360 - about 20+ seconds on ps3. i don't know what else was fucked about it, but that would be enough to piss me off.

OK I just read that. I had kinda glossed over it the first time.

Yes saying that would be pretty fucking stupid. Trouble is, that's not what I was saying.

I posted the news item to say that the Orange Box sold really well. That's all.

I wasn't saying it was a victory for PC gaming over the 360, nor was I gloating that a PC game sold some percentage more than the 360 version. I was happily pointing out that the game sold 1.5+ million on the PC period.

In fact I find it a pretty big deal that the 360 version sold nearly as well as the PC version, which means that it is a big advantage for Valve to release it on cross platform.

Finally, look at the subject line:

ORANGE BOX sells like hot bitches - significantly more than 1.5 million PC sales

Yes, that's right. I wrote more than 1.5 million PC sales.

Is there any mention of the Xbox 360?

In fact the link I posted was just confirmed the data that the game sold over 1.5 million copies on the PC. At no point did I mention anything about it beating the Xbox or some shit like that.

You know what, I am tired of being misunderstood on these forums. People always seem to assume the worst. Maybe its a language gap, maybe I am not saying it right. But I pointed out an advantage of gaming on the PC in terms of graphics, and I was automatically accused of being a fanboy or whatever, when I was just pointing out something I saw as a natural advantage. It is like saying the 360 is more convenient, or more conducive to gaming with friends. Would pointing that out make someone a 360 fanboy?

Here, I was simply pointing out the game did well on the PC... period. At no point was I gloating about it selling better on the PC, when it actually did very close. Even my subject line reflects this. It says significantly more than 1.5 because that's what Valve did, without giving an actual figure. If they had, then that's the figure I would have stated. This thread had nothing to do with the 360, and just with the fact that PC games can still sell. I know it can't sell like the 360... of course not. Halo 3 sold over 8 million in a few months...

Now I understand why you said:

Oh I am sorry, I thought PC gaming was dead?

So yea, I am tired of being misunderstood. wtf... whatever.

dude, sorry! no offence intended. it's just with your last few posts / threads here i can see a trend in trying to justify pc gaming, or whatever, and saw fit to comment. for the record, i'm primarily a pc gamer too. don't take it so personally!

i guess i shouldn't read in between the lines as much as i do, or something...

HAha but it says Happy! underneath it ;D

Anyway, I think the sales records do make a clear statement to the developers/publishers that the PC market is still very much alive and kicking. It would be unwise to neglect it.

1.5+ M for Orange Box alone, sum that up with the 1.6 M of STALKER and other titles and you've got a signficantly marketable niche.

I wish this thread didn't exist.

This is going to sound very arrogant, but that's the way I'd want it. I want PC games just to sell enough to continue selling, but not to the point where the art gets lost. Two of the greatest games ever made, Deus Ex and System Shock 2, were commercial failures to the point where their ideas had to be diluted in subsequent installments to appeal to the mass market.

I doubt a game as hardcore as S.T.A.L.K.E.R. would be released if it were designed to sell to 10 million people. What do you guys think?

I agree. It's a simple formula: for something to appeal to a larger audience it has to be more "generic" and less "specific." The more specific it gets the tighter the audience gets.

You can keep some of the people happy all the time, all the people happy some of the time, but you can't keep all the people happy all the time. The problem we're having is they're only making some of the people happy some of the time.

Niche stuff is always the best stuff to those who love it, but it's harder to makes it appeal to more casual audiences.  It's just the way of things, and the only real reason we're seeing such obviously-increased disparity between one and the other is because gaming has gotten so popular, increasing the available audience that developers can appeal to.  This is why I never wanted gaming to get popular when I was younger.  It's like when you find an awesome band and you love them, but then everyone else finds out about them and their next album is fucking schlock because the record label wanted to work their way into cornering another demographic.  Now that's not nearly what we've got here, but it's the same principle on a different scale.  There's always going to be that weird line that gets crossed when you're dealing with the business side of art.  I mean, that's what this stuff essentially is: selling art.  All other artistic mediums go through the same troubles, it's just a bit worse when it comes to games now because of the massive amounts of money it takes to build them and the huge profits they pull in.
