Aparently the base game has been free from Vivendi for a while now, but the master server and authentication system was taken off line.  These guys patched/modded the game to use a custom system.

Well, Tribes 2 was released for free as a promo for Tribes Vengeance. It was a fileplanet thing, and shortly after the promo started they ran out of CD keys. So you could download it but you couldn't make an account to actually play. Then the master server and auth went down and unless you knew the server IP you couldn't do shit.

Now with this the game really is free, so woo!

I could very well be inclined to play.  I still have a copy lying around somewhere, and I loved the game back in the day.  And now it would actually run well!  My system was rather crap back then.

Well thats freakin cool, I too played a fair share of Tribes 2. Though whenever I tried to go back to it later I could never find a server that I could connect well with that was the basic game setup, everything else had some crazy modded shit with it or ridiculous sound bytes.
