Helped in part by generous Michigan tax breaks, developer/publisher Stardock (Sins of a Solar Empire, Demigod) is planning a $900,000 expansion of its headquarters to accommodate development of a new PC roleplaying game. The expansion will create some 53 jobs, pushing the company's workforce to well over 100 employees--an impressive number for the once-modest Plymouth, Michigan based studio.
Tax credits amounting to $900K have enabled the company to open a second studio that is in the very early stages of a cross-platform RPG inspired by Baldur's Gate-style games. The new studio, about 8,000-9,000 square feet in size, is a floor located within the building where Stardock currently operates. There will be around 50 new employees added to the company through the expansion, bringing the total headcount to over 100.
As for the fruits of the new studio, which Wardell hopes will be fully operational by summer, its debut game is still a ways off. "I would be surprised if the new RPG came out in the next three years," the chief exec says.
