2K Boston returns to being Irrational Games
« on: Sunday, January 10, 2010, 07:52:44 AM »
2K Boston has dropped their 2K Boston name.
They're going to be Irrational Games again.

Also, worth noting - Irrational got a counter counting down on their website.
In the title bar it says "Something is coming..."

Hmmm...new website, is obvious.
But, is there another game coming from Irrational?

Interesting.  I'm guessing the timer is just a countdown to their new site with the community features and stuff the article mentions.  Probably need time to get all that together.

Seems weird.  Everyone said it was a terrible idea to change the name to begin with... no idea why they're only just realizing it now.  And stupid, too, since one of their biggest games ever they released under a different name.

Is Ken Levine still gone?

I'm not familiar with Irrational/2K Boston aside from the name.

What was their big game?

Bioshock was their big hit game.

Here's some Irrational games:
Bioshock
System Shock 2
Freedom Force
Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich
SWAT 4 + expansion
Tribes: Vengeance

EDIT:
Worth noting - the three guys who co-founded Irrational (Ken Levine, Jonathan Chey, and Robert Fermier), they worked at Looking Glass Studios.
Some games from the Looking Glass - Thief 1 and 2; System Shock 1; Ultima Underworld 1 and 2.

Some things never made it into Bioshock.
1.Doberman in a wheelchair.
2.Funnel Frog.
3.Sea-Slug Gatherer (this was replaced by The Little Sister later on)
4.Two different Big Daddy types.

There are two different Big Daddy types:  the drill one and the gun one.

Nice to finally see some word regarding some of the studio rumors, too.  I always felt like something had to be wrong with a lot of that.  I've had too much personal experience with these people to easily believe most of it.

Either way... curious to see where they're going.  But I'm still hung up on that goddamn zombie game.  Whyyyy am I not playing that right now?!

Irrational Behavior - Episode 2.

Quote
Irrational was once a tiny team that made games on miniscule budgets. Today we’re much, much bigger and the budget’s grown along with the ambition of the group’s games. This month’s episode of Irrational Behavior explores what these changes have meant for the studio’s culture and the individuals who’ve been on board as the industry itself has had to adopt the professional practices of big business.

Episode highlights include an insider take on the making of Thief, designers Dorian Hart and Alexx Kay waxing nostalgic on the days when they were allowed to do voice over work for Freedom Force, as well as the story of a mysterious onanist who secretly used artist Shawn Robertson’s office for forbidden self-pleasures.
