This service will be going LEGIT, as well.

Pirate Bay sold; going legit

Swedish torrent site The Pirate Bay has been acquired by game networking company Global Gaming Factory for $7.8 million. As a result of the purchase, Global Gaming Factory plans to turn the site legitimate, with content providers and copyright holders being compensated for their products that appear on the site. Hans Pandeya, CEO of GGF said:

"We would like to introduce models which entail that content providers and copyright owners get paid for content that is downloaded via the site.

The Pirate Bay is a site that is among the top 100 most visited internet sites in the world. However, in order to live on, The Pirate Bay requires a new business model, which satisfies the requirements and needs of all parties, content providers, broadband operators, end users, and the judiciary.

Content creators and providers need to control their content and get paid for it. File-sharers need faster downloads and better quality."

The deal is expected to close in August.

Am I the only one who doesn't care about this?

The pirate bay started sucking a year ago. I think I downloaded like 1 thing from there ever.

If you're going to download TV shows or whatever like I mostly use it for, there are far better sites.

That's surprising.  How exactly are they going to make money if they pay royalties or whatever to the copyright owners of things the established userbase expects to get for free?

Yes, there are much better sites to find torrents, and they include TPB offerings.

I'm sure this will turn out as well as when Napster went legit.

*EDIT*
I miss Napster. It was such a great time.

This is stupid.  Basically they paid millions for the "The Pirate Bay" name.  If they think they are buying TPB's "customers" as well, they are crazy.

I'd bet they've probably got plans to start a new one up and name it The Thieves' Guild or some shit...

That or just take the "booty" from the "Bay" and set sail to some Paradise Island...

I guess this will barely cover their legal problems.
