My only issue with the PS3 so far
« on: Sunday, December 06, 2009, 02:56:06 AM »
Is the stupid wifi. It is quite terrible. Even though it is reportedly connected at 100% by the PS3 itself, the downloading can be quite poor.

Any tips?

Hmm... my speeds aren't super hot, but nothing out of the ordinary as far as what I expect from wireless.  I have little experience with it, though, beyond this and the Wii, and neither have had download times that've been long enough to annoy me for the most part.

Wireless-G has a 54 Mbps maximum throughput.  You usually have something like a 1.5 - 20 Mbps connection to the Internet.  So, your wireless shouldn't be slower than wired when speaking about the Internet.  If it is, you are probably dropping packets either due to a crappy WAP, a crappy wireless NIC, wireless interference, or a poor signal.  If you are using Wireless-B, Wireless-G, or the 2.4 Ghz part of Wireless-N, make sure you don't have any 2.4 Ghz cordless phones as those can really make wireless suck sometimes.  Microwave ovens also emit radio waves in the 2.4 Ghz range.

If possible, use 5 Ghz Wireless-A or 5 Ghz Wireless-N.  I'm not sure if the PS3 has a dual-band radio in it or not though.

No idea about any of that, but like I said, I haven't noticed anything being slow enough to warrant looking into it.  The only thing that would really put me off would be if playing online lagged a lot, and my experience with PSN has been perfect in pretty much every regard.  No drops, no lag, no funny business.

Well, my PS3 was lying flat on the floor. As soon as I put the router on the floor, the connection improved quite a bit. You'd think that wouldn't affect it at all though.

I've had no problem with the wireless, and I use it for online play and downloads.

My biggest problem with the PS3 is the controller. Its awesome when playing games, but if you put it down on anything but a hard flat surface, the trigger buttons have a habit of getting pressed by accident. Annoying.

I've had that happen to me once... on Demon's Souls no less, which caused me to shield slam off a cliff.  :(

Yeah, that's happened to me a couple times too.  Nothing disastrous, but it's a bit irritating.

You know I really enjoy about the controller. How feather light it is. The newer ones are a bit heavier though.

The PS3 controller is probably the most comfortable controller I've ever used. Ergonomically it is almost perfect.

Schlotzky's comment confused me - why would you ever put the controller on a flat surface when you are playing? I guess I've had the shoulder button hit my knee a few times when I was playing, but nothing other than that.

I think he is referring to setting it down, like if he was taking a break or something.  I know what he means about the sensitive shoulder buttons.  I've set the controller down on the couch before when playing Demon's Souls and since that game doesn't have a pause button, I've done shield attacks like iPPi did just without the falling off the cliff.

Yeah, that's the game I noticed it most with too.  Also a few times when I was playing Burnout (since pausing isn't really necessary when you're driving around if you need to set the controller down for just a sec).

I mainly noticed the problem while playing movies/music. Its especially obnoxious then, because the shoulder buttons make it ff.

My only issue with the PS2 controller was that it was so small that it would hurt my hand during the more intense gaming sessions.

I've set the controller to turn off automatically after 10 minutes if it's not in use, so when you pick it up after watching a movie, it's already off and accidentally nudging the shoulder buttons don't do anything.

I would do that, but then the controller would turn off in the middle of playing MGS4.

BA-ZING!
