Trash Panic (PSN)
« on: Tuesday, January 19, 2010, 11:11:36 AM »
This is a very quirky but surprisingly deep puzzle game on PSN.  The basics of the game are simple -- throw trash out into a bin and don't let that trash overfill.  If three or more pieces of intact trash fall out it's game over.

What makes it so challenging though is how you manage that trash.  The game throws all this crazy trash that makes it very tough to fit it all into the garbage bin, so you have to use a couple of different tools and methods to empty the bin out, such as smashing everything, burning it, or decomposing it.

The difficulty of this game is also very, very hard.  There are only 5 stages in the game, but the second stage is like a brick wall.  In a sense, it reminds me somewhat of Ikaruga in terms of difficulty.  Once you figure out how to proceed with the level and handle some of the trash, it becomes a lot easier, but at the start it's quite daunting.

Anyway, it's $4.99 on PSN and it's probably worth a look.  It's definitely addicting to a certain degree, and it's one of the most unique and challenging puzzle games I've played in a long time.  If you like tetris style games, you will love this one.

Here's a video of the game:

I got this game a few months ago. It is definitely like nothing I have ever played before.

I found it really really hard. I got to the 4th level I think. It was the one with islands and skyscrapers. I stopped playing cause I couldnt really figure out what the game wanted me to do. It seemed virtually impossible to beat a level and get a good score. The only decent ways to get rid of trash is to burn it, but when you burn stuff you loose points. Unless you cover the trash, but then you have to watch the o2 meter and make sure the fire burns everything you want it to.

I just made it to stage 3 two days ago.  It's very challenging, but there's a level of depth to the game that is absent in a lot of puzzle games nowadays that makes this one feel so different.

This game is so fun once you understand the mechanics.  Very, very steep learning curve, but once it clicks, it's an absolute blast to play.  I'm still not sure how the ranking system works yet, and I can't get past stage 5, but it's still a blast.

Picked this up when Sy came over to visit tonight, and I'll be damned if this isn't a ridiculous amount of fun.  You weren't kidding... there's a lot to this.  It's really as cool a concept as it seems.  It's really quite a game.

This game is kicking my ass. The first level I had no clue what I was doing and ended up beating it on the first try. The second level was a bitch and took me at least 10 tries to beat. I've played the third level a little less than 10 times and haven't really gotten close - I've beat the first boss a few times but not gotten much further.

A few things - I have no clue what the bomb is. Does it drop or is it an ability? At what point does the fire completely die? At 0 O2?

And I'm not always sure when to put the lid on and for how long. I usually keep the lid on after all the flammable stuff is out to let the metal smolder, which I'm guessing makes it more brittle. But it only stays hot for a few seconds and I'm not able to capitalize.

Does throwing trash over the side (i.e. fruit, water, etc) decrease your score? And do water barrels burn with water in them? I've been smashing them but that just fills up my trashcan with water.

And there are a few mechanical things that aren't quite right. I know that trash that is smashed and falls over the side doesn't count against you, but every now and then I will have something fall over and it doesn't register, or two pieces of whole trash will fall at the same time and only one will count.

Bombs are _intact_ (so don't smash them) gas tanks, or a bomb shell that you get.  You'll see them eventually.  There's one at the end of stage 2 and a few in 3, 4, and lots in 5.

Fires die at 0% O2 so make sure to remove the lid before the O2 runs out.

Throwing trash over the side increases your Ego rating.  In the game, you go either Eco or Ego route, Eco being more friendly and saving the Mottainai; ego using bombs, burning trash, destroying Mottainai (not recommended to destroy these).

It's difficult to burn things that aren't broken.  If an object is broken, it will burn more easily (unless its flammable like the toilet paper and potato sacks).  Obviously you can't burn things that are under water, but that's what the decomposition ball is for.

It's really more like a puzzle game, figuring out what combinations of water/oil/fire/decomp to use.  I can get to the fifth level on easy and normal, but can't beat it on either one.  Fun fact: mottainai means 'wasteful'.

Yea I'm stuck on stage 5.  Can't get past it.  I've been able to get past the boss in stage 5 but then the trash after that caught me off guard and it was over really quickly.

It did work, it just took a while to become available. Here is my first try of the ring the bell challenge. I did pretty shitty.
