Using Steamworks instead.

So...which one is the frying pan and which ones the fire?

For Idol - yeah, not good for you due to your I-Net connection. :(

For many people - they just seem to have problems w/ Steam for whatever reason - whether it's offline mode not working; VAC ban; blob file won't boot (I had that one before); etc etc.

At least w/ Steam, you do have offline mode - so you can play the game offline, if need be...as long as they don't have issues w/ getting offline mode to work, of course.

I wonder what Ubi is gonna do about past titles like AC2 PC, Settlers 5, and SC: Conviction. They gonna remove the "Are you online DRM check?" Or what?

Personally - I'd rather Ubi just force a damn disc-check.

So far I'll take Steamworks over Ubi's crap. At least it gives you an offline option. In this particular case it is the lesser of two evils.

I hate lesser of two evils situations. That how we end up with most politicians.

Anytime there's a Steam version or Steam is required for all versions period, NO extra DRM should added to the game. It's redundant and pointless. Steamworks DRM is (more than) enough.

Haha or as South Park put it "between a giant douche and a turd sandwich."

I kinda like how Battlefield Bad Company 2 did it. If you get the retail version you have the choice between a 1-time online activation on the SecuRom server (no need for disc in the drive) or the traditional disc check with the disc in the drive each time you want to play. If you got the Steam version it's just Steam you have to worry about.

A neat little trick I discovered about the Steam version is that its CD key can also be used to install the non-Steam version (if you have a disc or an ISO). So if Steam is bugging you, you have another choice.

See, I'm totally cool with that. I don't care if they decide to sell it on Steam, it would be stupid of them not to. I just want an alternative, non-Steam version I can buy and play.

NOTE: I didnt make this thread to bitch about Steam (ok, I sorta did), but to note that Ubisoft shied away from their DRM solution. Which is rather significant.

It's nice to see UbiSoft shy away from their Ubi-DRM - which I thought was a waste in the first place. I hope they remove it from their previous games that use this DRM, as well - ESPECIALLY the versions w/ Steam, since you'll get double-DRM slapped w/ Ubi-DRM and Steamworks DRM. That's just bloody murder. I'm really curious how much money Ubi spent on that pointless DRM - which wound up cracked in a matter of time. What a waste.

I bet Idol could really go for Impulse-versions of Ubi-games which only use GOO or zero DRM period. Chances are - big publisher like Ubi would likely use GOO or some other Internet DRM, if there's an Impulse version.

About what X said - yes, more games should go for the BC2 route and give the gamer the choice of DRM, if they opt for the retail version. I think that since Steam is so popular and has such good friends tool and all, I really wish more games that you buy at retail and gave you option to use disc-check version DRM or the ability to just turn your retail version into Steam version - which Dark Messiah and X3: Terran Conflict does.

Yeah, that's a big statement. At the very least it says that even Ubi realize how retarded they are.

Spoke too soon.

Ubi DRM will still be used for “most of our PC games,” says Ubisoft
