Apparently this finally hits the states July 11!

Still waiting on the re-release of VI though.

There's a general lull in participation on the boards.  I was never much into the Dragon Quest series, so I'm not much help.

I don't have much experience with the series other than DQVIII, which Julia played a hell of a lot more of than I did.  It looked awesome, though.  I bought her several of the DS remakes as well, but I haven't really heard back from her on those since the divorce.

I don't have a ton of experience with the DQ series.  I played the original on NES, and bought VIII and played through roughly 25% of it.  I enjoy them quite a bit.  Definitely old school mechanics, and it's a series that really doesn't take itself nearly as seriously as the Final Fantasy remakes.

I have never played the originals, but I can say that the remakes on DS are well done.  The graphics are very pretty.  I can't compare the content to the original, so I'm really not aware of what (if any) significant changes that were made, but I'm currently playing through IV and having a blast.  I have yet to open V though.  I figure since IV, V, and VI are meant as a trilogy there's little point until I finish IV.  V is getting very difficult to find, as apparently it did not sell well in the states.  I was lucky enough to find a copy on Newegg at the end of last year.

IX is supposed to be a pretty significant departure though.  Famitsu gave it a 40/40, for what that's worth.

I got curious enough to try out the NES games.  I remember them now.  I found the look and feel too primitive to get into them.  I tracked down VI (SNES) with an English patch.  This I may be able to follow for a while.  I'm wandering around the home town figuring out what to do.  I'll have to get into some combat before I can say whether I'll have any real interest.

Cobra if you're really interested, grab a cheap copy of Dragon Quest VIII.  I think it's basically old school RPGing perfected.

Such a wonderful game to play.

Oh man. I was thinking this was for a console, then I saw it was for the DS...I don't have one of those.

Just an FYI, on August 1 K-mart is running a deal where if you purchase DQIX, you get Zelda: Spirit Tracks for free.

Yeah I took advantage today.  I already have a copy of Spirit Tracks that's still sealed.  But I was going to grab DQ anyway, might as well get something free out of the deal.  I can always trade in a copy, or if my morals fail me, tell Wal Mart I got it as a gift and basically break even on the deal.

I've been able to put a little bit of time into this game and so far it's very enjoyable.  It's a self-contained story, so experience with previous titles isn't necessary.  It's very charming.  Doesn't break any new ground or anything, but sometimes that isn't necessary.
