What is it?From Wikipedia:
Dropbox is a Web-based file hosting service operated by Dropbox, Inc. that uses cloud computing to enable users to store and share files and folders with others across the Internet using file synchronization.
Why is it awesome?It's web-based, but that isn't the main benefit. The main thing is that it auto syncs, so if you have more than one computer or a computer and a smart phone, you can have pretty much instant access to whatever files you know you're going to want to access from both. For instance, I have my laptop, my desktop, and my Android phone. If I do a finance spreadsheet that I know I'm going to want to access from all three, all I have to do is make the spreadsheet on one of them, put it in the dropbox folder on my computer, and it syncs to the other two (for the phones, it doesn't sync unless you want it to, so you don't have to worry about unwanted data charges). After that, it's simply a case of opening the file from either of the three computers, and, after modifying, it automatically syncs upon saving as it's stored in the auto-syncing folder.
I had been looking for something like this for school for quite a while as it removes the risk of using a USB stick (lose it, you lose all your shit), makes it so you don't actually have to download shit from the cloud when you need it (as it auto syncs. Unless of course it's a first install on a computer you don't usually use), and it makes small file transfers between computers and especially phones easier than, say, swapping a stick, bluetooth, or ftp.
Another benefit with the phones (at least Android), is you can usually just long-hold pretty much anything with a sharing menu and send it straight to dropbox, making transferring pictures and such more seamless than bluetooth, wifi, or usb.
Finally, I haven't done this, but people are saying you can operate it like Steamcloud...at least with some games. So, you make your dropbox your save folder (in games you can change it or in games with very small install sizes...emulators are great for this), on both machines, and regardless of what machine you're playing on, both installs/saves are updated. Like I said, haven't done this but it seems interesting.
Is it free?You get 2GB free. For most applications, this should be all you need. You also get a bonus for referrals or for being referred yourself.
What do I want?Well, primarily to see if more of you are interested in this, because I think some of you may find it useful if you're like me, accessing 2-4 devices (counting my station at school) and have files all over the place and a huge fear of losing a usb stick or missing shit when backing up. Beyond that, I'm not going to lie to you;
I want more space without paying for it. If you're interested in using this, and you use me as a referral, I get 250mb of extra space for each person. Beyond that
you also get 250 mb of extra space. Seems kind of like a win-win if you're into using this or trying it out at all.
And seriously, if you have an Android phone (also, probably iphone), you do need to try this out.So, if you want to check this shit out, either shoot me a pm with a valid email adress so I can refer you, or (I'm not 100% positive this will work as it says to post it on facebook or twitter) click the following link and sign up that way:
https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTE1MTcwMDgyOQ?src=global0The fact that I'm trying to get some free shit here aside, I've found it to be a pretty awesome service - useful for my needs at least, and think you should check it out...even if you don't want to do it as part of the referral option (but come on...help a nigga out).
