I used the word reckon today
« on: Friday, November 10, 2006, 12:25:01 AM »
It just slipped... dear god, I dont know what got into me. We had a meeting at work which put everyone behind. Well one of my co-workers asked if I was going to eat supper tonight and I said, "I reckon I won't have time to." Right after that I thought where the hell did that come from!?!

Help me.

I love that word.  Afoot.

Anyway... you need to spend more time in California.  They're changing you, man!  You've got to get away!  I say you come out for another vacation.  =D

You don't have to worry until you say "Y'all".

Y'all is fine, but you REALLY have to worry when you say 'All y'all'

I am a Texan and I get embarrassed when I say 'all y'all'
Suck it, Pugnate.

Yeah.  "Y'all" is bad enough, but "all y'all" is so redneck (or ghetto, depending on your part of the country -- we get that here, but only from guys with 12 gold teeth and the vocal grace of a tenacious rodent).

My biggest problem with "y'all" is that it's always used wrong in comedy.  They're trying to make fun of Southern folk, but instead come off looking ignorant themselves.  "Y'all" is one unofficial form of plural "you".  The English language has no plural form of "you", and it needs one desperately.  That's why people invent them ("y'all", "you guys", "youse", "y'ons" . . .).  But the "enlightened" entertainment people keep using it to refer to a single person.  Of course it sounds stupid then.  It's wrong!  Saddest part is that some people who might use it will learn the wrongness and emulate it . . . I reckon.

Y'all isn't that big of a deal, unless you drag the syllable out.  I say it here and there and it threw people off in Phoenix sometimes when I would say prompting an if I'm from Texas question(which I am). I say it fairly quickly in speech so most people wouldn't catch on to it. Surprisingly I don't hear "all y'all" too much here(near Austin) and I don't ever say it, I say "all of you" or something to that effect.

I made a joke about strippers being dead inside at work today.  Nobody thought it was funny.

Nothing, except that it's best said while leaning against a split-rail fence wearing wranglers and a ten gallon hat.
