So... I bought an Xbox 360 but it's defective.
« on: Friday, November 17, 2006, 08:37:22 PM »
Xbox doesn't boot with the hard drive attached.  Works fine without the hard drive.  I'm gonna take it back to the store and see if I can get a new one.

MS made an awesome deal today, and today only it appears:

Xbox Premium Bundle (GRAW and Arcade volume 1 included)
Ridge Racer 6
Gears of War
-- $449.99 CAD.

If only it worked like it's supposed to.

Sweet!  Welcome to the horrible club of doom.

I have to say, as reluctant as I was to get a 360, I'm super happy with it at this point.  The benefits of the technology are actually starting to become obvious to me.  Gears of War is an audiovisual experience like I've never had.  That isn't to say it doesn't have great gameplay merits too, but it's nice to see the developers make a game that is not only just plain more pretty, but that takes advantage of that power in the art department by giving you all kinds of moments that take your breath away because the technology manages to actually elevate the core concepts beyond what we've seen before.  It isn't just the same old thing made prettier, it's the same old thing pushed through a new boundary.  There are plenty of games that are just prettier and little else, but I think Gears is in another category in that regard.  I'm not being very clear, but it's hard to state what I mean.  Dead Rising is mostly just a bit prettier than some older games, but there are a few moments it uses its technology also to truly do something visually unique.

Anyway, between DR, Gears, and Viva Pinata, I can't say this thing wasn't worth the money.  Even just those three games have been some of the best console gaming I've had in a while.

I'm still on the fence between the 360 and the PS3.  Hopefully shortly after christmas I'll be getting one or the other along with a new LCD TV.  Right now though I'm leaning toward the xbox.  I'm fairly certain I'll be able to score one cheaper and I don't think there are any PlayStation franchises that I can't live without.

I'm probably going to buy a 360 at some point, probably after a few price drops. Hopefully by that point the system will be a bit more stable. Right now I wouldn't buy without an extended warranty of some kind though.

I can wait for Gears of Wars, since it is likely coming to the PC....

...Even if it might be for Vista ONLY. If it is (unfortunately) for Vista ONLY, I'm sure when I get a new PC some years down the road, it'll be equipped w/ Vista -- or some newer Win OS.

I bet GoW would rock for MP on the PC....oh yeah.....!!

Gears is not a PC-oriented game.  It's very much a console shooter.  It would work just fine on the PC, and there would be some slight advantages in terms of KB/mouse, but I suspect it will always feel 100% more natural using a controller.

Oh indeed, I'm not trying to be disparaging.  I'm just saying that waiting because you think it's going to be a lot "better" is silly.  Though I have heard rumors about there being extra content (which, as usual, pisses me off -- stop punishing early adopters, you stupid motherfuckers!).

I think any extra content to an updated version of any game should be available to download for anyone who got the game before. Epic are good to their fans like that. For UT2004 the Editor's Choice Edition content was available as a free bonus pack for anyone who got the game before the ECE version hit the store shelves.

Epic said they will support GoW on 360 with extra content, though you'll probably pay extra for it. Then again, Epic is known for the huge packs of free stuff for the PC so maybe they'll do the same here.

Either way I'm shit out of luck because I don't have the hard drive.

1080i is FUCKING awesome.

I still haven't tried Gears of War yet though.
