WTF is... Dungeons of Dredmor

So this came out on Steam a little while ago which was met with much sadness from me. But because I was a good boy this year they just released it on Desura! Hooray! $5! Hooray again!

I bought it. It's awesome. Dude's right, it's basically a Munchkin roguelike. It's actually quite funny and I died my first time in the first fucking room, basically because I killed myself.

God I love these games.

Well worth the purchase. This game really puts its own spin. It's definitely a roguelike, but it's got a lot of fun little twists in there that make it feel very different. And for all its fluffy exterior, this game can kill you dead in like 5 seconds. You'll get cocky, sidestepping traps everywhere and doing awesome things and finding items that split the earth in two, then a spell will backfire or you'll get stuck with some sort of enemy or situation you aren't too well prepared for, and WHAM. The sense of humor is great, though, and really encourages replaying. I've run into a bunch of really funny stuff so far, some of which isn't just raw humor. Like there are interesting rooms and shrines, weird usable objects, stuff that's not just a sight gag or a funny item description. Also, there are tons of game references. The monsters talk sometimes, and I about died when a group of bats told me "there's strength in numbers" (there was like 6 of them, it was terrible), another said "you're terrible at this", and a third one, right before it killed me, said "you n'wah" (Elder Scrolls gag).

I don't want to spoil half of it. Everyone should grab this!

EDIT - Haha, Clerks reference. And I want to spoil so much about the lutefisk.

EDIT x2 - This game has destroyed my productivity with extreme prejudice.

Yeah, this game is great. I just ran through my first game and got killed. I learned two things.

1) Bolt of Squid is a totally awesome weapon that will kill everything in a room.
2) Do not be in the room you fire a Bolt of Squid into.

Yeah, I just ran through my fourth game. Finished the whole first level, got an awesome glass sword from an Anvil of Krong that shot flames, and had a full inventory with all kinds of shit. And I died when there was something I just couldn't resist putting inside of something else. One in my inventory, one there on the floor... I wonder what would happen if I just...

It's a shame there wasn't a gaggle of badguys around me at the time. Would have been interesting to see how many I took with me.

I actually survived the initial explosion. It was on the next turn that the fire killed me.

Damn, you can spend a lot of time on any one level. Its like never ending. I just got to the 2nd floor after like an hour of running around.

Haha, did you get to the 3rd floor? I wont spoil it, but its themed and pretty awesome.

I need to learn up on some stuff. My inventory is full of crap that Im not sure I can use. Lots of crafting materials and I have one of every crafting device. Can I even use them if Im not trained in them? If not I should just dump the crap.

Oh yeah, and I opened a monster zoo. Holy shit, close door and run like hell.

Haha, I ran into one of those too, but my weapon was so awesome and I had enough traps that I managed (love those shoddy Dwarven IEDs). And yeah, the levels are truly huge. I haven't gotten to the third floor yet. Barely even got to explore much of the 2nd last time.

It seems like crafting is a mixed bag. I did like you and more or less never had the chance to use anything. You're pretty limited by what level of skill is required to craft anything. Even though I was gearing toward engineering stuff, I only had a 1 in it, which meant half the recipes were shit I couldn't craft. I don't know what you can do to raise that. I basically picked everything I could toward that at the start, or at least I thought so. Having all the tools seems semi-useful since there are recipes that require no skill beyond 0, but there's definitely a limit on how much you can do. Most of the materials are going to be useless. The problem is that you never know which ones will and which ones won't, so you sort of have to carry them around with you or just decide "Okay, fuck alchemy" or whatever.

To raise them I think its an option at level up, but only for the crafting skill you took at character gen. Havent seen any other option than that.

Also I wish you could learn new weapon skills. Ok, so I took axe at the start but I picked up a totally awesome mace of doom and my dude couldn't figure out how to use it. Sucked that I had to stick with my still fairly wimpy axe.

ok, now I see where lutefisk might be useful. Funny, took me till the 4th floor to find my first shrine after which I promptly die (I gave it 80 lutefisk, too). Next game? Second damn room is a shrine. Ah, randomness is random.

So I didnt get anything out of finding them yet, but now the...cube...seems much more useful.

Heh. Indeed. Apparently it's sort of a funny thing... just giving it huge amounts I guess doesn't do much, it's more like after a certain threshold it gives you something, but if you give it way more than that, you don't get anything extra. Or something.

I havent figured it out yet.

Also, Im liking to rogue skills. Picking up traps and using them yourself is major handy.
