UMD Passport program for Japan

No word on the rest of the world yet.

Playstation Vita is backwards compatible with PSP games, with the catch being it has no UMD drive. So in Japan there will be an app for the PSP called "UMD Passport" which will detect the game in the drive and unlock a discount on the PSN store for you to repurchase it. The article mentions "The re-purchase price ranges from 500 yen ($6.46) to 1000 yen ($12.92)." So I figure $5-10 if the US gets a similar deal.

It kinda sucks that you have to pay again for a game you already have but I can see why Sony chose that. Nothing is stopping people from passing their UMDs around to get discounts, imagine if they were giving you the games for free.
