Viva Pin-- ... wait, what the fuck did you just say?

GSpot hands-on preview

So I saw this and thought, "Wow, that looks super neat!  How come I haven't heard of this before?"  I checked out screens, thought it all sounded pretty fun and cool.

Viva Piņata Official Site

Then I went to the official site and felt a sudden urge to kill myself.

Haha. Talk about an overload of flowers. There's like 20 flowers per page.

Oh yeah. Rare's new game. Apparently Tycho from PA fell for the game big time at E3.

Well, I didn't really read anything except for "life simulator" and look at a few screens.  I don't have much to this, but I will say that one of my darker secrets is that I've thoroughly enjoyed raising chaos in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2.

Well, I picked it up for Julia today.  I was watching On the Spot at GSpot the other day and one of the guys was playing it.  I called her in to see it and she was interested, so she checked out some screens on GSpot and thought it looked like fun.  So far she's just been watching me play it because she didn't feel like starting something so late in the evening, but we've been having a good time.  The animals are super adorable and all animate really well, and the world itself looks pretty nice.  There's a bunch of crap to do, and most of it is satisfying and entertaining, and you really get the sense that you could be doing all kinds of different things at any given time, building your garden in a different fashion from the way you've done it.  The only problem thus far is the fucking animals fight like *all the time*.  It's like a freaking death-fest up in my garden.  Not quite sure what to do about that.  I'm guessing it's just too many in close proximity, but they haven't given me the option to expand my borders yet.  So... that's a little annoying, but otherwise the game seems top-notch.  I'm having a great time.

So this game is actually pretty damned awesome.  I was expecting to like it, but I think I like it a lot more than I thought I might.  This is well worth checking out for anyone that likes a sandboxy game, and while the kiddie stuph is there, it really feels a lot more intelligent and such than I expected it to be.  The voices aren't completely annoying, the writing is actually rather sarcastic and funny at times (stuff that kids wouldn't appreciate at all), and the gameplay is both simple, fairly deep, and addictive.  I think it really wins because it's consistently engaging, never leaving you without something to do.  The fighting still irks me a bit, but you can really avoid it pretty well if you play watchdog and just start beating rogue pinatas with your shovel.  It can be hard to keep a high population of mice, say, if you've got snakes about, but all you have to do is sell any resident snakes and then just give any snakes looking to move in a nice whack on the noggin.  So I've been keeping out most of the predatory creatures and troublemakers, just keeping a few peaceful animals I happen to like.

And the game is truly funny.  I've done some dumb shit that's gotten me into a bit of trouble, such as building a garden of toadstools before I realized they were poisonous.  All my pinatas bumrushed the things and start devouring them, then all of a sudden I had like 10 sick pinatas lying around groaning in pain.  Heh.  And I had to pay like 230 bucks just to get rid of each remaining toadstool.  So I have no idea what those things are good for, but it sure ain't eatin'.

Anyway, definitely check this out if you like sandbox games or life simulators.  It manages to be more than either of those genre pigeonholes, but those are where the base fits most heavily.

I know nobody cares, but GSpot's review is up.  To quote the video review, "If you dismiss this one because you think it's just for kids, that's *your* loss."

Julia and I are both having quite a lot of fun with it.  It's pretty crazy.
