Dear Larry Frum:
This article has been revised and revised and it still doesn't get the terminology right. Wii U= the system. GamePad= the controller. It's not that hard to get that right consistently.
You're an embarrassment to yourself and CNN. I'm shocked your superiors have allowed this garbage to stay on the site since you're clearly NEVER going to get it right. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I can't really blame him completely. Nintendo has not marketed this as anything more than a new controller. The only people that know it's a new controller are people that watch E3 or read about it online. Nintendo has only showcased the controller for the most part, and that's why I can understand people not understanding that the Wii U is the name of the system, rather than the controller.

I remember seeing an article on Yahoo of how CNN was going down the drain. This article proves that.

Give Larry Frum a break, guys. At least he didn't mistake the Wii U for a toaster.

I will take the long wait and see approach with this item, probably even skip it. Wii was over-hyped and wound up as a paper weight in comparison to Xbox 360/PS3 in my home.

This Wii U sounds like an awful lot of work. What made the 1st gen Wii so cool was the absense of controllers... maybe I just don't get it.

I don't care if some people aren't sold on the Wii U as long as they have an informed decision. This article fails in every way. It is clearly written by someone not at all understanding what he is writing about. And the little band aid patch job still doesn't fix the person doesn't know what they are writing about.

Sure, some things were corrected now, but the article still refers to "holding the Wii U" and Pikmin as a "kid's title." Really? Seriously? This is bad, bad journalism by someone who obviously has no idea what they are talking about. CNN should be ashamed.

For everyone on this site that is confused about Wii U, please go visit a gaming website to find out real information about it. This article is lousy with mistakes, and just plain ignorance out what Wii U really is. This article really needs to be drastically edited or pulled from this website because it is a disgrace that a company like CNN would post an article with so many mistakes about something that is very well known by the rest of the world. Gaming websites all over the internet are now having a good laugh at CNN's expense.

Or at least hire a couple of writers that are gamers too. Nobody does their research like a gamer. That's why so many things got called out in this article

This is not a "version" of the Wii. It is a new, unique gaming system. The writer of this article is a moron and didn't even make that distinction.
It will, however, play old Wii games and use old Wii controllers.
The "two games" the writer mentioned are actually just minigames from one game: NintendoLand. The writer couldn't even get *that* right.

This thing is gonna bomb like like Nuke Test. Sure, you're gonna have the Rabid Nintedo-paths buy it the day it comes out but when those are done and the novelty wears off by January, sales are gonna tank. I mean, seriously, who would buy something this stupid? No Thanks.
The Wii itself was just a GameCube that they added motion control too; not kidding. It had the exact same processor, exact same RAM, exact same video card, exact same audio card, it plays GameCube games and you can even plug 4 GameCube controllers into it. So if this is just a "Souped up Wii" it's 11 year old technology that they added a touch screen too. Whoopty Flippin' Do.
Once again, Nintendo had the opportunity to put a nail into the $ony and Micro$oft gaming console coffin and they forgot to bring a hammer.

once you failed to mention is that the gamecube was way ahead of its time and never lived up to its full potential.......but I do agree that adding a feature to it does not make it a totally new product

You're saying exactly what everyone said about the Wii in 2006. "It's just a gimmick, it'll flop in 2 months". The Wii-U has proven its specs to be better than the 360 and PS3, although not by a significant amount. It's not 11 year old tech in the Wii-U. Nintendo has been re-imagining gaming since the NES, and they've done well with it so far.
They wouldn't slap a screen on a controller and call it a day. If you know anything about how businesses work, you'd know taking risks blindly is financial suicide, and that they've thought incredibly hard about everything they've done. The Gamecube could support 3D games, but they didn't go with it because they new people weren't ready. They were working with Sony on a disc-based console and decided to stick with cartridges a bit longer. They did motion control with the NES, but...

"Nintendo plans to release a wide range of games, from kid titles like
"Pikmin 3" to offerings for hardcore gamers like "ZombiU" and "Mass
Effect 3."
If you have ever played Pikmin you woukd now its far from a kid title. It can be more challenging than any "Hardcore" game that has been released this generation.

Mr. Frum, you may have replaced the word "accessory" with "device", but your article still reads as though you don't know that the Wii U and the Wii U GamePad are two separate devices. In many places you refer to "the player with the Wii U", when in actuality ALL players are using the Wii U. Only one player is using the Wii U GamePad. It's time for a major article review.

As has already been pointed out, the writer should've conducted more research into the article before putting it up (while also potentially showing the uphill battle Nintendo is going to have marketing the Wii U to the public).

This article was obviously written by someone with little to no gaming knowledge and who doesn't give half a damn about Nintendo. Why not hire a gamer to write articles about gaming, qualifications include owning 1 of each current gen console and a PC with a library of games including at least one FPS, RPG, Action/Adventure, Fighting, Racing and Strategy from the current generation.

Nintendo isn't releasing Zombi U. Ubisoft is. Nintendo isn't releasing Mass Effect 3, Bioware is.

I'm not sold on Wii U.
I'm sure Nintendo itself and anything it helps publish will make great use of the gamepad, but from the moment I laid eyes on the Batman: Arkahm City port, I got the sinking feeling that third party support will just be "Take some user interface and basic functions you were able to do with the buttons and joystick, and now make them ridiculous and call it 'immersion.'"
I think I'll be holding off until the next Smash Bros. is officially announced.

A cross platform game is never going to make use of the unique control system as well as a game designed specifically for the Wii U. They're not going to design an entirely separate version of the game for Wii to make use of the controls, and they can't make the game highly dependent on those controls because other platforms won't have them.

That's fine.
The problem is that many publishers, like Rocksteady with Arkahm City, will feel obligated to make it obligatorily used instead of integrating it uniquely. I can already control the Remote Batarang, set explosive gel, scan evidence, etc. with a standard controller or mouse/keyboard, why force me to take this thing and hold it up to the screen to do that? Can you imagine the Riddler challenges that require the Remote Batarangs, and having to raise and lower, raise and lower the pad before you get it finally? Unnecessary chore.
A better way to integrate it would've been for context sensitive information relay. If a villain is in a scene ,it brings up their bio for you to browse through. If you're in combat, it provides real time score tracking and performance evaluation and skill commands.
