How many of you in New York?
« on: Saturday, August 18, 2012, 04:43:48 PM »
My brother in law is traveling there to pursue higher studies, and is traveling on his own for the first time. He will land there at 10 pm. Safe?

I hear they randomly murder people on the street after 9 o'clock.

Step 1: Find bodega. Step 2: Buy butterfly knife. Step 3: Cut fools.

The mean average life expectancy of a person entering the city of New York is a minute and a half.  Your brother in law is pretty much screwed.

In all seriousness, New York is perfectly fine.  Just tell your brother to not to walk alone down alleys, in shadier parts of the city, or in Central Park at night.  He'll be fine and should enjoy it.  New York is a cool city.

Just don't wander into the wrong areas, which basically means stay in the good ones--lit up, clean, denizens look human.  NY is a much better city now than it was 20-30 years ago.  It is a great place to visit, if ridiculously expensive.

Basically like a regular big city. He is going to be picked up by some distant relatives and has a week to find accommodation. I envy him. I am still in this hell hole. :P

The trick is: kick someone's ass the first day, or become somebody's bitch.

I just moved to NYC.  Big fan so far.  As everyone has said, most of it NYC is safe/interesting/fun.  You'll know pretty quickly if you are somewhere where you probably shouldn't be.

I think the key to integrating into NY is to work on your blank stare.  You'll use this all over the city, but particularly in the subway.  It's a zombie-like forward stare, but be careful not to make eye contact with anyone.  Eyes can be a little glazed over, but you must be somewhat alert.  The goal is to make yourself look as soul-less as possible.  Once you develop this, I'm pretty sure you are 95% of the way to being seen as a New Yorker.

It's so true though.  When I visited NYC with Jennie, my father-in-law (from New Jersey but worked in NYC) just said not to make eye contact with anyone and just to sort of stare straight ahead.
