On the importance of being here.
« on: Monday, October 14, 2013, 05:31:42 PM »
It's been a while since I've made a thoughtful post on a message board. Well, to be honest, it's been a while since I've posted on any message board at all. Not since I left here. This place was my last true residency on a virtual community. Which is a funny way to describe something that has no physical space. This community has held several internet spaces over the years and some have even met up in physical spaces, who should be applauded for the continued sense of community. How is it possible that some random people from a corporate message board (I speak of those that flocked here originally from IGN) could end up, a decade and more later, still communicating with each other? I think that speaks volumes to the type of people that inhabited and continue to inhabit this forum. The people here were always what made this community feel special. It's what kept me around for seven years and brought me back after another seven years of absence.

Though this community has no specific physical location outside of these internet constructs, there are strikingly vivid memories I retain associated with the people and community here. Just seeing certain screen names again had me recalling a very vivid memory at the age of 16 or 17 of riding to a gas station in TN to get a Cheerwine and a snack after talking at length with Savarian_Syan (now sirean_syan) about a video game called Rez on the IGN message boards. Though there have been shocking revelations, minor feuds, and a fair share of drama and argument -- the real reason this place felt different than other message boards about games, movies, etc. was the thoughtfulness and sincerity in most discussions. That is something that is hard to find, whether online or off.

That's why I was surprised to find that this forum was still going, but in the back of my mind I wasn't surprised at all. I was glad. Glad that somehow, people kept it going -- because it did mean something. That is all too rare in a format that is constantly changing, so many websites and message boards forgotten, even near-impossible to view through the internet archives. Here we are, inching into a third decade where a large majority of people have had access to chatting, messaging, e-mailing and sharing with people all over the world that they may meet, or never meet in a physical space. It's something commendable and worth taking note of.

 :)

I'm basically still here to remind Idol that he still hasn't finished Dark Souls.

In all seriousness, I post at a board that is much, much larger than this one.  I used to prefer it to OW, but in the past few years I've come to appreciate the slower pace of this board.  Not to mention a handful of us are a daily presence in the IRC channel, so I interact with them more than most of my friends that actually live near me.

I think we could really do with another 10-15 more active posters, though.  Hopefully Idol reopening registration will facilitate that.

I'm still not sure if we're all just lucky that decent people bumped into each other or that decent people attracted other decent people. Either way works for me really.

New folks wouldn't be so bad though. That's probably something I've changed my mind about over the past few years. We're all mostly old friends here now and as such we tend to say less to each other because more simply isn't needed. I love that sort of situation but the hard part about an online community is that it exist mostly in text and simply hanging out does quite work the same. Unfortunately I have no one to offer up. People here are so focused on work that talking about something as "trivial" as games is sort of  forbidden. Hopefully I can break that when I'm not a student anymore.

That is certainly part of getting older. When I think how much time I devoted to playing and discussing games in the past, I wonder where the time came from. Yet, I always found the discussions outside of the field of gaming to be the most intriguing on here. All in all, it was kind of a feeling of relief that you were all still out there somewhere, able to accessed. I've come across other communities I was involved in where that simply wasn't the case.

I don't have much time for it either, though I still love it and try to squeeze it in here and there, just for the experiences that really seem worth it.

But yeah, I can say a lot of the same about this place. I don't have the time I once did even for just fucking around on the Internet and talking to people, but I'm glad to know all these folks and to call so many friends. Even though I don't get to hang out and chat as much anymore (or goof around in IRC like I used to), I'm still here and nobody ever feels far off.

We could use a little new blood, I guess, but for me the slow pace is totally okay since I don't have much time anyway. Means I never get too far behind on things and don't end up sitting here way past my bedtime or when I should be doing other stuff.

I post on the LitReactor boards a little bit, but still not consistently. This is the only place I've been a consistent presence since the long faded glory days of PlanetQuake.

Yeah, so many memories. I've spent a lot of time away, but I always come back to say hello because I grew up with you guys as some of my closest internet buds. I was a teenager when the IGN boards went pay-only and we jumped ship to AOG (actually, there was that other weird message board before that, can't remember which one) my memories are going...

Gamers.com is where I joined up. I just remember it was black and blue colored. Or something.

Ace! Glad you're around. Yeah, it's a funny thing... those were some really good years on those boards.

Gamers.com! Ah yes... I kind of liked the awfulness of that forum. It felt really secretive and shitty, very nocturnal looking. Horrible interface.

I can't imagine our group not being here.  It's as perennial a home as the very real and varied places I've lived in.  We're like brothers, and yes, brothers brawl now and then.  But we know in our hearts that we are all a decent and worthwhile lot.  The importance of being here applies to us all.  We are better individually and as a group because of it.  Welcome back, ender.  Welcome home.

I did notice how you came back while I was gone. I see what's happening here. And I like it.
