The New Order is set in 1960 after the Nazis won World War II. Gamers play as the familiar American war hero B.J. Blazkowicz and are tasked with launching an "impossible counter-offensive" against the Nazi powers that have taken over the world.

Nazibots!!

It's pretty clear that id/Ravensoft/BethSoft are have having a very hard time identifying what makes a Wolfenstein game besides "BJ Blazkowicz versus Nazis."

Gravelly-whisper trailer voice guy is awesome!

I'm not defending Wolfenstein or generic run-of-the-mill shooters but Warren Specter should stick to his genres and aesthetic style (Disney-esque happy fluffy stuff), which I do enjoy as well, but his opinion on a shooter is about as moot as a Peta's opinion is on anything related to animals. That said, I do agree with him.. It's just him saying it is no big surprise and adds no real value because it's expected of him. If hordes of teenagers say it (or tweet/facebook it) that would be a much deserved slap in ZeniMax's amorphous face.

What the bloody fuck is wrong with Nazi robots? Honestly. The screens look fun to me! Trailer wasn't that awful.

I don't know. I mean I get it, this isn't going to be an important game, but does every game have to be? Do we need to rail against every stupid thing that's out there? It's not like this is going to get trumpeted as a wonderful and cerebral experience, everybody's going to be playing it just to shoot Nazi robots. What's the problem? I only take offense if you stop calling a spade a space (ala Twilight and 50Shits in the publishing world). Otherwise, just let people enjoy some dumb fun if that's what they want. I'm an avid supporter of trying to do better and enjoy better things that enrich your life rather than just give you more puerile amusement, but come on... sometimes even the best of us just wants to shoot zombies/stab Nazis/blow up spaceships. It's not the end of the world.

Okay, to me, this is what Wolfenstein was always about...

Killing Nazi's that are trying to take over the World; anything pertaining to do w/ The Occult; & Super-Soldiers!
Robots fit right in line w/ Super-Soldier, if you ask me.

Wolfenstein was never really story-driven. It was always kinda a bit off-the-wall in the story (see Raven's RTCW & Wolfenstein reboot) - if there was one even attempted at.
But, yeah - all of them Wolfensteins were good fun for shooters.

Bring on a new Wolfenstein!

EDIT:
It's pretty clear that id/Ravensoft/BethSoft are have having a very hard time identifying what makes a Wolfenstein game besides "BJ Blazkowicz versus Nazis."
To me, that IS a Wolfenstein game!

The answer Warren seeks isn't making fewer of these games, but making more of the other. They can both exist. It's not like the people working on Wolfenstein are sitting there wishing they were making the next Journey instead.

I find it kinda funny Warren's complaining about Wolfenstein IP here, yet he worked on the famous Mickey Mouse IP.
I'm sure that IP's been around WAY before Wolfenstein. ;)

It seems to me there are more games in both camps individually than any individual person with a job or life could conceivably play already anyway.

Probably, Que.

The thing is - I think the perception of many people is just in what the big publishers & AAA-dev's are doing; especially on the consoles.
I'd guess most of those console gamers are in-tune w/ what's on the game-shelves at Retail, not what's on XBLA.
I doubt XBLA is as big on the Indie scene as say the PC is with digital services/distributors like Steam.

Wolfenstein and Doom's problem is the same.  You just can't make that game any more.

Clever level design and mindless shooting just don't get it done nowadays.

Wolfenstein: New Order

I'm not sure what to think of it.  As a story game, it's pretty good.  They spent some quality time on the writing and voice acting.  It's fairly engrossing.  The game's mechanics are terrific.  It works at a perfect 60 fps nearly all the time.  I only had one instance of it dropping to an obviously unplanned-for 30 fps when I was spamming some shrapnel shotgun blasts down into a room with a super-soldier and a bunch of grunts.  The shooting, takedowns and stealth all work well.  The problem is that it feels nothing like the classic id game.  I spend way too much time nearly unarmed trying to slink through hallways undetected.  I'm already playing 2 other games where stealth and melee are the bulk of the gameplay.  I was looking for a balls-out shooter, and this game doesn't fit the bill throughout.

Now I have that nifty laser cannon, and that seems to stay with me.  But why does everything else, including ammo, go away from level to level?  Sorry, but that's not Wolfenstein.  That's something else.  I also hate the saving system.  But that's a universal problem now with games.  Everyone is yanking ownership and control of saves away from the user.  It sucks universally too.  Checkpoint autosaves with no way to save manually are heresy in id games.

Not done yet.  But I think I'm getting close.  Certainly a quality effort.  Just not what I was expecting.

Oh, one more thing.  Whoever came up with the idea of sprint jump as a do-or-die mechanic while using a left-stick click as the sprint button needs to be tarred, feathered and run out of town on a rail.

While it is an Id property, Id didn't develop Wolf: TNO.

GarageGames developed Wolf: TNO, which has some of the key people that once worked for StarBreeze (on Riddick: Butcher Bay + Dark Athena; and Syndicate FPS).
Both Riddick games + Syndicate FPS use the checkpoint auto-save system.

Like yourself, I do prefer saving at any time - like in old-school PC shooters.
Since console-shooters got popular, since Halo + Call of Duty 2 - we often don't see saving at anytime as much, these days + age.

EDIT:
Also, we do have a Wolf: TNO Thread over there already - in case at some point, it might be worth a mod going ahead + combining the 2 threads together.

Merged. Interesting to see some of those old posts, too, as this really didn't turn out to be a "dumb" game at all. On some levels, sure, but mostly in concept. In execution it was really pretty amazing that they managed to make everything as heady as they did. Though no surprise given their pedigree.

I played more balls out than you seemed to, Cobra. I did some stealth for sure, but I also felt like I got my shooting fix.

That said, of course this isn't truly Wolfenstein. I mean it would sort of be hard to do that. Sure, you could do something like what they did with the new ROTT game, but anything on an AAA level, forget it. I thought they did a great job of reinterpreting Wolf for a new generation.

But I do understand your complaints. I didn't go in with the expectations you did, though. I knew what I was getting into, and from the start I didn't really think this was going to be related to Wolf in anything but theme. I mean, that's kind of how it's been with all the subsequent Wolf games.

I would say that structurally, from a level design standpoint, this is much more of a throwback to RtCW than it is to Wolfenstein 3D. I doubt there's a big audience for the keycard hunt style of Wolfenstein 3D and Doom 1/2.

I did a lot of stealth in what I played of TNO, but I fall into the hesitant and stealthy style of play naturally anyway. If I can stealth and be careful, I will. I like that unlike most games with stealth, there was the option here of going guns blazing, so it avoids the "well shit, I got spotted, I might as well reload the last checkpoint."

Thanks for merging the threads, Que.  I'm usually more careful about that.  I didn't remember the original thread at all.

Even RtCW felt more like a straight shooter than this.  Maybe I'm not recalling it correctly, but I just don't remember such heavy reliance on sneaking and careful infiltration at the beginning of every level.  Worse, I don't recall ever being stripped of my firepower every level.  I collected all those weapons, and I should still have them, with exceptions like the moon trip or going to prison, where it makes sense.  (And on the moon, the laser weapon is the first thing you recover without a fight anyway.)  I did find the Easter egg where you play through the first level of the original game, though.  I even remembered the secret exit, but it doesn't seem to give you anything.  I was hoping for some gold objects, or something.

So, I finished Wolf: TNO (PC) today.

The game's fantastic itself. The story + character development is easily the best that I've seen in a Wolfenstein game (certainly better than RTCW + Raven's Wolfenstein 2009 had going on). All of the little posters, articles, and audios that you can find - they can get one immersed into this. They do set the scene for certain characters + also give some detailed how the alternative scenario set-up in this game-world turned out (i.e. how the Nazis took over the world, in this alternative + fictional world). When the game offers any opportunity to find, look, or listen to this stuff - yes, I certainly do! I need a break, from the usual intense pace of the excellent action.

When the game's not giving you a break from the action, the action's just flat-out awesome. Often there are these huge, open-spaced shoot-outs + awesome weapons that you can upgrade. Not only that, but most guns have slick alternate fires, which are awesome. If that still isn't enough, almost every gun - yes, even assault rifles + shotguns - can be double-wielded. The combat is just flat-out tons of fun, intense, and a blast to play. Also, there are stealth elements that you can use - to kill enemies from behind, which is good if you kill commanders so they don't sound alarms (to call for more enemies to spawn and show-up to help out).

On my rig (i7 950; 1 GB VRAM GF 560 Ti; 16 GB RAM) - while the game runs at 60 FPS with what I have it set on, for a brand-new game in 2014 to have basically a repeat of the RAGE issues b/c of the way the MegaTextures work + lack of PC optimizations - i.e. muddy textures in the game-world for objects when up very close to something + looks like this game needs some AA settings in-game in the actual game-menus (not just hidden in the game's config files): that is probably my major complaint here. Things looks great, out in the distance. Character models look great. When you're close, it looks fine + really nice - but when you're ultra-close to objects (like posters, articles w/ writing, etc): this is where things can get muddy, blurry, or anything of that sort. I can't run the game well at all here and it goes all over the place, when turning certain things on. It gets much worse especially by disabling the VT Compression (think single-digit frames of 2-5 frames per second + tons of texture popping going on) - which is probably built for much better hardware-users.

I tried messing around w/ the NVidia Panel, trying to get some better quality on the images while trying to keep something near/around 60 FPS performance here - I had both FXAA + VSync from NVidia Panel overriding what the Id Tech 5 Engine got going on here; and some other things jacked-up. Looks a bit better, but not where I'd like them to be namely when things are up ultra-close - since some objects can get blurry and muddy, when up ultra-close.

Here's what I had the game set on in-game, on my rig:
