Brigador
« on: Wednesday, June 15, 2016, 12:47:52 PM »

Really stellar game, at least so far, came out of early access at the beginning of this month. I've only put a couple hours into it, but it really does a lot of things right. Think: crossover between a twinstick shooter and a serious mech game. It's got tank controls that take some getting used to, but there's a huge array of different mech and vehicle types (like tanks and anti-grav vehicles too), plus tons of different weapons you can purchase and outfit them with. There's actually a fair bit of lore as well (not so much straight story, more like background stuff, codex-style ... but extremely well done), and there's a full novel they did up I believe both as an ebook and as an audiobook that you can get. The soundtrack is killer as well, very synthy stuff ala Perturbator, Carpenter Brut, Dance with the Dead, etc.

Will be reviewing this for GoombaStomp shortly, but wanted to at least get a thread up. I had trouble getting review keys from the PR people but recently got that resolved with one of the devs, who also has recently been lamenting about how hard it is to get noticed in the vast sea of indiedev, and how that's been hard on them (http://imgur.com/gallery/bGLAQ). Writing about indies and spending a lot of time looking at them, this is something I see more and more commonly, and it's often heartbreaking, and usually has nothing to do with the quality of the game. I hadn't even heard of Brigador until very near launch, even though this is right up my alley.

Anyway, my initial impressions are very positive, so give it a look if it interests you. It's got a fair learning curve (on the order of an hour), and then it starts getting really fun. I'll have a full review hopefully within a week.

Did an interview with Hugh Monahan of Stellar Jockeys. Some very interesting stuff about the game and indiedev in general:
