Darkest Dungeon
« on: Thursday, June 25, 2015, 12:53:57 AM »
We talked a bit about Darkest Dungeon here and there, but no thread for it, apparently. So figured I should make one.

Was a kickstarter, probably the last I'll ever back, got well funded beyond expectations, is out in early access, and has been for contributors for a while. It's also really fucking good. Think: party-based Lovecraftian roguelike tactical RPG with autosaving and permadeath, and a management/roster/upgrade layer similar to Xcom and the like. I did a little writeup on the game when the kickstarter was still going, though it's more rambling and introspective than about the game proper. Regardless, the game's in our hands now, and it's so good. Despite being early, it doesn't feel gimpy or lacking components, and it seems like they've been keeping your saves playable as you go. Final update will come later this year and bring it to the full release. I believe that's set to include the last dungeon area.

Give it a look if you haven't yet, especially if you're a fan of roguelikes, squad-based strategy, party-based RPGs, Lovecraft, or Mike Mignola's artwork (he didn't draw stuff for it, but the style is clearly heavily influenced by his work). It's shaping up very nicely, and I've dumped about 9 hours into it with no signs of slowing down. Still feel like I've only just scratched the surface.

Hopefully we'll start getting some action in here.

Darkest Dungeon releases officially tomorrow! Launch trailer!

Content complete and will be showing up on GOG tomorrow morning (and of course Steam). I almost never buy games on day 1 and prefer to wait for sales, but I think I'm making an exception for this one. I am super excited for it.

Steam informs me I have 48 hours in this already, and I'd say that's across about 2 incomplete playthroughs that I've done during various stages of development. Possibly 3, as I might have started and stopped a couple times when I first started playing. It's a liesurely 48 hours.

But yeah, this game is truly fantastic. It's deep without being overly complicated, it's difficult in an approachable way (it does require you to learn from mistakes and understand the game, but you're meant to suffer some deaths and setbacks as part of the core game loop), the art and sound design are fantastic, and the tactical game is inherently enjoyable. Every time I play, I get sucked into the loop.

So yeah, I highly recommend this. It's also being actively supported by the devs, who are really good at interfacing with the community. I've seen them at least twice drop into streams I've been watching, and they talk to people, run their own streams sometimes, and seem to have struck a good balance between listening to hardcore players and trying to keep an informed balance in the game systems. They've also talked a lot about how they plan to support the game, future free content additions, possible expansions ... this game has a great future ahead of it since it's already done well for itself.

Definitely check it out tomorrow! I plan to stream it a bit at some point soonish, so you guys would be welcome to drop by and get a sense of the game, or ask some questions about it. And there will be tons of people streaming it tomorrow I have no doubt. The game has found a good audience there since it's fairly tough and people love to have characters named after them and such.

I'm pretty eager to see the new stuff, even though I haven't exhausted the existing areas. One of the last content packs added a new class I haven't tried, and I think a couple new miniboss type enemies. Really excited at what the endgame is going to turn out to be. They're adding a New Game + mode as well, I believe.

EDIT -

Pretty spot-on review here. Explains the difficulty and the grind, but also how the game's strengths make up for those. I'd say "grind" is a relative term. This game is all about dungeon diving, so while progression can occasionally feel grindy if you're looking from that perspective, the entire game is pretty squarely focused on just getting back in there. It's how good that experience is that makes the game what it is. I'm usually very sensitive to repetition, and even after 50+ hours with the game, I still feel excited during each run.

Got a let's play going on YouTube, which starts here:

Got far enough into the ruins to get a boss mission to kill the necromancer. I was excited! Put my team together, give them trinkets, it was a medium length mission so I made sure I had plenty of food and shovels just in case! LETS DO THIS! First room had nothing, second room was a fight. Ok my torchlight is getting low, time to pop one.

Uh....

God damnit. I didn't pack a single torch. Decided to dark run as long as I could and then camp, which would bring me some light. But I was no prepared for that and eventually had to abandon the mission.

I watched some poor girl do 2 party wipes early tonight, the first of which was due to the fact that she didn't realize you have to re-purchase all your goods every excursion. Oops. Her second run was quite heavy on the inventory, but she didn't do any better.

I love that this game is getting popular.

EDIT -

So the game will only be $19.99 until February 2nd. If you want to grab the game soon, grab it before then. Goes up to $24.99, which is the normal release price until whenever the next sale happens.
