GameSpot's Best & Worst of 2006 -- GameSpot's Game Of The Year is up...
« on: Friday, December 15, 2006, 03:43:57 PM »
Here's the link for GameSpot's Best & Worst of 2006

Here's the link to the actual 50-min episode w/ all the nominees and categories and stuff

The episode that reveals ALL the nominees and categories EXCEPT Game of the Year, is around 50 minutes long, I should note.....yeah, VERY LONG.

So, yeah.....discuss who you think will win, who you want to win, what you think of their nominees, what you think should've been nominated, what you think of the categories, etc etc, blah blah blah -- you know....

Yeah, just discuss....

EDIT:
I find it interesting that Mark Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure is nominated for Most Surprisingly Good Game. The Godfather is even nominated for that, since most of us probably expected for it to be...well, another bad movie-to-game translation, but it turned out pretty well, actually. Though, I did expect Mark Ecko to get nominated for Best Use of Licensed Music, though -- since it does have a great hip-hop soundtrack for a game.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey's nominated even for a few awards: Best Game No One Played, Best Original Music, Best X-Box Game, Best Story.

Anybody play GTR2? That's up for Best Game No One Played and Best PC Game, as well.

I think BF 2142 will take the award for Most Despicable Use of In-Game Advertising....hehe. :)

Not I.  Much as I loved the game and all, I don't think it was GOTY.  I still didn't enjoy it as much as Morrowind.  At this point I don't think I've enjoyed anything nearly as much as FFXII, though I'd have to think about whether or not that would be GOTY material.

Okami is definitely really high up there, but I still don't know about GOTY.

What about these other three games you own -- Gears of War? Dead Rising??? Company of Heroes??? GOTY Contenders, in your book??

I don't know, but 2006 really has been a stellar gaming year, on most platforms....

Oblivion is my pick for GOTY, but there been so many great games this year -- especially in the RPG genre.
NWN2 is a major improvement over the original, to say the very least -- especially since the performance issues been finally squashed, for the most part, w/ patch 1.03. Definitely a contender for GOTY for year, but not my pick. Oblivion is my favorite RPG this year easily, though.

GW: Nightfall has been very good, so far -- probably will be my pick for MMORPG.

FF12 seems to be a lot of buzz -- from loyal FF fans and non-FF fans.

Hitman: Blood Money was great. Best entry in the Hitman series since Hitman: SA.

Gears of War has my vote.

Most fun game I've played this generation.  (Last generation was Resident Evil 4).

Definitely not Gears of War.  It's amazing and awesome, but it's a bit too short and they didn't use all the concepts to full advantage (read: fairly dunderheaded boss fights).  Not Dead Rising either.  Very cool game, but it had a few too many problems and little niggles that set it back.  Company of Heroes was awesome, but when you get down to it it's still just another RTS to me.  I did have a great deal of fun with it, but it wouldn't make my personal GOTY, and I'm not entirely sure I think it deserves it even aside from my personal preference.  Hard to say with that one.

I think really it's coming down to the fact that FFXII has kept me more engrossed and addicted than any other game I've played this year, and it's super polished, got great graphics, a gorgeous and robust soundtrack, wonderful characters and story, great art design... it just pretty much doesn't have any real bad spots.  I mean, it isn't 100% perfect, but there are few things I can point at that are at all disappointing to me.  I think I'd have to give GOTY to that, closely followed by Okami and Oblivion as runners up.

And MyD, obviously Nightfall is your pick for MMORPG.  You've never played any others.

Does RE4 get better as you play? I played for 30 minutes and though it wasn't bad, I didn't understand the hype.

What you're saying makes me wonder this -- would you go as far as saying it's probably the best FF ever made???

I haven't really played any of the PS2 FF's, namely from FF10 and beyond. My favorite FF were FF 5, 6 and 7. FF6 and 7 were probably my fav. of the FF's. FF8 was probably one of  the worst of the FF bunch, I think.

Oh, I know you played FF10, but did you play FF10-2? If so, how was that???

I didn't play X-2.  Not much interest in it.  Julia played it and enjoyed it quite a bit, and it was something of a step toward what FFXII's battle system is, but FFXII is still quite different.  And yes, I would say that FFXII is the best FF ever made.  Most people will tell you that's VI, but I tried going back and playing it and I can assure you that yes, that's nostalgia talking.  The game wasn't horrendous or anything, but even as a super-hardcore old-school game guy I couldn't enjoy it much, *especially* after the improved fluidity of the modern FF titles.  I think there are areas where the old games shine more, but I can most definitely say that FFXII is (in my experience) more fun than I have ever even come close to having with other FF games.  The story is a bit less personal, which should be kept in mind, as it focuses more on war, politics, that kind of thing, but the characters are still great and the writing is *INFINITELY* better than all the FFs that came before it.  Really though, what I love is that the entire game is basically this huge playground where you can fight really tough bosses.  There are regular enemies, sure, but nearly all the side quests are basically boss fights of one kind or another.  If you love taking on big enemies that will challenge you, look awesome, and keep you up nights in anticipation of your next encounter, this is your game.  This also makes it a little bit less linear than some other FF games.  I mean, story progression and world exploration are both somewhat limited to the exact path of the story, but not entirely.  You can go places you aren't necessarily meant to and fuck around a while, and there are so many "hunts" (find boss-ish monster, go kill it) that you can, and you can do whichever have become available in any order and at any time... so while I wouldn't *really* call the game non-linear, it doesn't feel nearly as much so to me as the other games did.

One thing I liked about the Dungeon Siege games that some RPG's lack: awesome boss fights.

I love good boss fights. :)

Less linear sounds good. :)

That's quite interesting that it sounds like this FF has really evolved compared to past FF's, in which this time there are a lot of side quests to do -- and that these side quests are more open to the player to take on whenever they feel, even if the game has say one solution for all of these quests.

Having lots of side quests and able to take those on whenever you feel is a good thing. :)

I think that is what the GTA games so attractive. Even though all these missions in GTA have one final solution/pathway to them, there's so many of them to do and you can take them on whenver you feel, you'll just keep playing and playing and playing.....

Oblivion for me is GOTY because it's the best RPG I've played since Fallout. Morrowind for me had billions of design and flow problems that kept me from getting into it. So I was pretty amazed at how well designed Oblivion was.

Oblivion was 100% better designed than Morrowind, absolutely.  However, it didn't have even half the content of Morrowind + its expansions, and there wasn't nearly enough stuff related to the world and lore.  Given that both games are a *little* bit hollow compared to other RPGs at times, that's the stuff that really keeps me coming back.  The gameplay is fun, there just isn't enough loot and collecting and upgrading.  I've been a TES guy for years and years (since a bit after Arena) and that's the biggest thing I think that hurts the game.  They just need a bit more variety in terms of how you can build your character and what kind of crap you can find.  So Morrowind keeps me coming back because of the society and culture you get to see in the game, which I find fascinating, and it's just packed with so much more story and lore and backstory and all that good stuff.  Oblivion is much more straightforward and doesn't involve you in those elements of the game as much as Morrowind did.  Not to mention Cyrodilic society is so much more standard than Dunmer society, and I found the political tensions and all that from Morrowind really enjoyable.

I really would like a REAL Oblivion expansion -- w/ lots of new quests and of course, more so than anything, lots of unique loot.

One thing that I really love about NWN2, Dungeon Siege series, and some of those games are the insane amounts of unique loot you can actually find in those games. These games are quite staggering in terms of all kinds of unique loot you can find in there, if you think about it.

Someone should make an Oblivion mod to add lots of new unique loot. Yuh, that'd be freakin' sweet. :) Though, I dunno' how the loot really should be placed, since the game's pretty much leveled right along w/ your character. Maybe some items should just have requirements for you to have to use certain loot, b/c some loot might be wicked powerful and you're just a weakling character -- kind of like how D&D games might require a certain skill, character stat, or something else required before you can use such an item.

Morrowind definitely felt way larger and more diverse that Oblivion. And with the expansions its scale doesn't even compare. Oblivion, as great as it is, feels kinda like they got lazy with the items and equipment. There's just not enough diversity. Thankfully the community is making some great items, and compensating for that. Luckily I also learned how to use the the Construction Set (to a limited capacity) to create items that cater to my characters.. I really, really needed a ninja outfit and a matching Katana :P

It would be really nice if they do make a proper and complete expansion, something that would really expand on Cyrodiil; like Tribunal and Bloodmoon did for Morrowind.
