Some internet help.
« on: Tuesday, January 02, 2007, 02:18:12 AM »
Basically I've been trying to access www.ebay.com, www.hsbc.ca and www.paypal.com all day and have been unable to access them. These are the websites I use a lot of getting business, and hsbc.ca is where I do my banking.

None of them are responding, and what is weird is all the other banking websites are working fine. In fact everything is working outstandingly except for those three. Of those, only www.paypal.com opens but only after a long period and opens up on a very low version where all I see is basic text with lots of little red x.

I've tried tons of other websites that require logins or whatever and only those three are giving me trouble. In fact iterations of ebay including ebay.ca, ebay.au and ebay.co.uk are also not responding.

So instead of my DSL I tried using a dial up and those three are working perfectly well.

I called up my DSL ISP and they kept trying to convince me the problem wasn't from their end. So they told me to go to a website called

http://www.tracert.org/traceroute

On that website when I enter www.ebay.com it always stops responding at 10,11,12 and 13.

Similar story with paypal.

So I connected to my dialup where ebay is working fine and I tried http://www.tracert.org/traceroute again and pretty much the same issue though it tried to connect through a different route.

But if that is the issue then why are the websites working OK on dial up?

It is possible that you have a virus/trojan on your computer that is preventing access to those sites specifically, though I do think that it unlikely.  I mean, most viruses that I know of will block access to antivirus websites, but those three sites are not.

I'm not sure what the problem is though if it isn't a virus.

In order to test that theory, use a different PC (laptop?) to access those sites through your ISP.

Weird.  Check your hosts file to make sure nothing nasty put something in there that is redirecting you to some phishing site or something like that.

Edit:  Hosts is in %SYSTEM ROOT%\system32\drivers\etc

Yea I was hoping Scottws would answer heh. Anyway they had an issue with the DNS and everyone was away on holiday which is why it took ages to fix.
