Dreamfall: TLJ joins the STEAM club

Quote
'Dreamfall: The Longest Journey' Now Available on Steam

-The incredible modern adventure game to feature on Valve’s pioneering digital delivery system-

Durham, USA – January 12, 2007 – Funcom and Valve announce an agreement to deliver the multi award winning ‘Dreamfall: The Longest Journey‘ through Steam, Valve's pioneering broadband platform for delivery of games and digital content.

With a host of amazing review scores, including a perfect five out of five from Gamespy and a tremendous word of mouth, ‘Dreamfall: The Longest Journey’ has continued to garner critical and public acclaim. The game has recently received several prestigious Game of the Year awards and over a dozen nominations and awards in categories ranging from best overall game (for both PC and Xbox) to ‘Best Story’, ‘Best Music’, ‘Best New Character’ and others from world-leading websites like IGN, Gamespot, Gamespy and Gametrailers. Prior to release the game won more than fifteen ‘Best of E3’ awards.

“Bringing ‘Dreamfall’ to Steam is a great opportunity for us to bring this incredible game to one of the most exciting online gaming communities around,” said Trond Arne Aas, CEO of Funcom. “Both Funcom and Valve have been pioneers in the delivery of games, so Steam and ‘Dreamfall’ are a perfect match. For an independent developer and publisher like us it’s great to bring our game to a service with over 10 million users totally passionate about unique and innovative titles.”

“It’s an honor to offer 2006’s Adventure Game of the Year via Steam,” said Jason Holtman, director of business development at Valve. “Funcom has created an absolute classic with Dreamfall, and we’re looking forward to working with them and highlighting their success as we deliver this title to the millions connected to Steam.”

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey is available now via Steam. As a special two-week promotion to celebrate Dreamfall’s achievements, it will be made available for a limited-time price of $29.95, a $10 savings from its regular price of $39.95.

For more information or to download this new offer please visit http://www.steamgames.com. Visit http://www.dreamfall.com for more information on one of the best adventure titles ever released.

I'm glad I bought my STEAM-less edition of Dreamfall, sometime ago -- though SIX CD's for an install is annoying. :P

I guess that beats dealing w/ STEAM. :P

Pretty good adventure game, but it's no TLJ in terms of puzzles and all.

It's $20 or less, if you can find it in most retail stores (like Best Buy and EB) here in North America, I should note...

Steam has a real problem keeping prices in line with retail. 90% of the time you can buy retail for cheaper.

I fail to see why Steam is such a success... it is more expensive, and it feels like you aren't getting your money's worth because you don't have anything physical.

So they've replaced the greedy retailers and become that themselves. How ihas anything changed?

BTW I remember you mentioning how games in Canada had gotten cheaper. I meant to answer that but I couldn't find the thread. The reason was because the Canadian dollar rose dramatically over the past few years because of the increasing prices of crude oil (Canada supplies a lot of oil to the USA).

So since the CDN dollar was more valuable, the games prices dropped. However to you, it wasn't really that the CDN dollar got cheaper. I am sure you got money sent from the UAE to you, at higher rates than before so it evened out.

OK that was much longer than I had meant to be. :P

Not only that, but if something catastrophic were to ever happen to Valve or its servers and backups... *poof*  There go all of the games you bought through Steam.

I still remember moving back home and not having a wireless card for my computer and not being able to play HL2 single player.

Steam is convienient, but that is about it.

Convenient?  Surely you jest.  That's the most backwards and worthless piece of software I have ever used.  It did nothing but inconvenience me at every turn.  Not to mention it fucked up its own install once, fucked up the installation of the game once, and fucked up a successful install of the game once.  It also on numerous occasions refused to start in offline mode even when I'd done things correctly (and this was an issue as I was playing on a laptop that wasn't always connected to the internet).  I will never, ever use it again unless absolutely forced, and even then only with the utmost of reluctance.

I think the worst part about Steam is having everything tied to your account. Like if some schmuck wanted my Quake 3 CD key and somehow got it or it was generated in a keygen...oh well, I can get another copy of Q3 for not much money. But Steam? People will try get your Steam account, and once they do...thats it. Every game you "own" on Steam is gone. For me thats probably $200 now (Hl1 plus expansions, HL2, EP1, DoD:S, Defcon, Red Orchestra). That is a lot to lose.

I think the Steam software is a lot better now, less crashes etc. As for the games, you can pause the update and still play right? At least offline?

Looks like Jade Empire: Special Edition for the PC has joined The STEAM Club, as well -- click here for that link to its STEAM page.

This is from BluesNews, stating it's pre-loading already

So, will it be available in both formats? Steam and retail box with non-steam install?

I don't mind Steam too much, I just don't like having unnecessary applications installed (or running) just for the game.

I wouldn't mind steam if it made sense for me as a consumer. You mean to say I spend time and ISP money downloading it, plus I pay more than retail and I don't get any packaging?

Wow how great.

Correct.

I'm going for the retail box, of course.

STEAM is okay, as a concept.....I just really don't like how STEAM operates.

If you buy a game in retail box (in store) requiring STEAM -- like HL2 products, SiN Episodes, etc etc -- you STILL have to basically connect to the Internet, create an account (if you don't have one already w/ STEAM), then you connect to the Net to tell Valve/STEAM "I bought this game, now let me use it!" If I buy a retail box of the game, it should just install -- PERIOD.

STEAM, to me, should be really for dealing w/ MP-based game and those who buy actually games online to downloading the full version.

I really think that I shouldn't have to deal w/ STEAM for SP-based games. That should be the CD's/DVD's job, thank you very much.

What Pug said is accurate.  There is zero advantage except that you don't have to leave your house, but that isn't an advantage when you consider how long it takes to fucking download something that big even at decent speeds.  You could leave, buy the game, and come home much, much faster.  So STEAM is basically for really, really fucking lazy people who want to spend extra money, get less in return, and then have their installations take five times as long and possibly get corrupted or not work properly.  In other words, STEAM is for idiots.

Sweet. Retail box for me too.

That's exactly how I feel about Steam. Leave it for multiplayer games (or parts of games a la Dark Messiah) which actually require an internet connection to begin with.

Well in America and Europe and part of Asia yes.

The only reason I've genuinely considered buying off of STEAM is that it is tough to find titles sometimes here. Games like Psychonauts and Jade Empire, but then I just bought them off of eBay and with shipping they were still cheaper.

Yeah.  I mean, I can understand the convenience of being able to get titles more easily, but it just seems like it's a worse option than just going the traditional route.

I think what it comes down to is that people are lazy and will always take the path of least resistance.  "What?  I can have my game now and not have to get off my lazy ass or wait 2 days for shipping?  OKAYS!  It costs just as much or more and I don't get any packaging or documentation?  Well... so what?  I get to preserve the ass impression in my couch!  Small price to pay.  I don't actually own the product that I purchase but am tied to Valve via my genitals?  That might upset me if I even realized the reality of anything I actually do!  WEEEEE here's my credit card!"

I think these bastards are spoiling it for the rest of us. It is because of fools like these that publishers think we don't care about packaging. I feel so cheated when I pay $50 for a game and it comes with a cheap looking disc and a paper thin manual.

That's b/c they often want you to buy the $60 Special Edition, which will often come on DVD (instead of CD), with an extra Art Book, and other special extra "in-game" junk.

More games should come packaged like Jade Empire: Special Edition PC does -- comes on one DVD in a nice DVD case. Also comes w/ a Nice Game Manual, a Jade Empire Art Book, and a Jade Empire Poster. It's the only version of Jade PC Retail you can buy, too -- even better.

Forget Jade Empire on Steam, w/out all the packaging. For the same price, just gimme the nicely packaged retail edition, thanks.

Special Editions aren't anything new man. In the late 90s any normal edition of a game came in a nice case and a thick manual.
