Used Xbox 360
« on: Sunday, January 14, 2007, 11:45:04 PM »
So a friend of mine at work tells me he may be selling his Xbox 360 because he wont be playing it anymore due to being a new owner of a PS3. I was more than interested in buying it, its an HD one. We havent discussed how much or anything yet because I dont have money at the moment and it was more of a down the road scenario. Anyhow, I mentioned it to another friend of mine and was very wary I should get a used one because of all the stories he's heard of 360's going bad. What do you guys think?

I'd be wary if it was one of the initial ones that had problems.  The one I got doesn't have those problems because I didn't buy it anywhere near launch.  Find out when he initially bought it and then decide whether or not its worth the risk.  Me personally, I wouldn't want to own one of those early ones.

Personally, I'd avoid buying it used unless its from somewhere that offers some kind of guarantee, just because of how young the console is.

I got my 360 in November and my first one was defective.  My second one has been perfect though, so I would be a little apprehensive getting one used.

From an article I read at xbox.com, the designers were really hard-pressed to handle a lot of heat dissipation in a small form factor.  While in a game, the thing sounds like your car heater when you crank the fan all the way to max.  I'd be careful about getting one used.  You don't want one from the early batches which tended to overheat.

Yea, he said he got it a month after release. I think I'm gonna hold off as much as I don't want to.

I think you'll be happier in the end, man.  Last thing you want to do is get it and have it overheat on you and not be covered under warranty or whatever.  Just wait.  There's still only a few really must-have games, and if you wait you'll have the added advantage of getting them at cheaper prices later on when you get your system.
