F.E.A.R. Extraction point is freakin' sweeeet.
« on: Friday, January 19, 2007, 11:44:15 AM »
So after finishing Dark Messiah and Prey, I decided to start on the F.E.A.R. expansion. Normally I don't really enjoy expansions in shooters. Almost always I've had my fill with the original, and the expansions are just never innovative enough to hold my interest. F.E.A.R. is different though. It threw basically one enemy type at you till the end, and maintained the same internal architecture, yet never lost its intensity. It kept me more than interested through out, and I would gladly have played the F.E.A.R. expansion had it purely been more of the same.

Well so far I'd say played through 20% of the expansion, and while it is more of the same, there have been a heck of a lot of holy fucking shit moments. There also was a bit of co op gameplay that was pretty awesome. But yea, after playing other shooters coming back to F.E.A.R. makes me remember what a great game this was.

Good to know that it is a decent expansion.  I have been somewhat tempted to get it but I have decided against it since like you, I've often found fps expansions to be generally disappointing.

What I am really looking forward to is HL2: Episode 2 since it's coming packaged with Portal.

I think that's due in the near future.

Well as much as I enjoyed HL2, I haven't tried the first expansion yet. I am waiting for a three ep pack. There will definitely be one and it will include everything.

Anyway one I finish this, I will let you guys know how it is.

Yea I haven't tried the first episode either.  But I was reading that Valve will be releasing an Episode 2 pack that includes Portal, TF2, and Ep1 bundled together.

Yup, that would be the $60 HL2: Black bundle pack -- comes w/ HL2 (Original game), HL2 Ep 1, HL2 Ep 2, Portal, and TF2.

There's a $30 HL2: Orange pack -- comes w/ HL2 Ep Two, Portal, and TF2.

I really been meaning to pick this up.....

I loved FEAR. More FEAR would NOT be a bad thing.

I got it from here for about $20. Nice DVD ed.

However I don't know how worth it was, considering I hear it is pretty short.

Well it took me six to seven hours to finish, which means it would take any other person five. I take it slow in my games, and often reload firefights that I enjoyed particularly :P. I also take my time to admire all the pretty textures. :P

I had two complaints. I thought firstly it was ridiculously easy, especially with too many grenades and med packs available all over. My second complaint is a spoiler:

(click to show/hide)

Anyway the last level was hella cool in terms of art design, but disappointingly there was little story telling. Also the expansion was a good reminder of how intense and visceral a shooter can be. As Gamespot said, firing a weapon is a highly violent action, and F.E.A.R. embraces it better than no other. I remember thinking how the original F.E.A.R. game spoiled me with its near perfect simulation of a fire fight. Here I am thinking that again.

For anyone considering this, it is basically more of the same and in the end is a typical shooter expansion.

Also I think F.E.A.R. is one of the one of the only shooters which can easily get away with having significant portions where you just walk without battle and soak in the atmosphere.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to pick it up, I just really want to play through FEAR itself again.  Haven't gotten around to it yet.  But I should try to nab it for $20.  That ain't bad.

I just played Extraction Point for the first time.  Damn I forgot how good F.E.A.R. was.  The firefights are awesome and it has one of the best horror premises ever realized in a videogame.  My heart was pumping so much I had to quit after a particularly creepy scene.

I bet the Expansion rocks, gameplay-wise.

Though, I hope the expansion's story is as awesome as the original FEAR's was. 'Lith are pretty good at their storytelling. They sure do that style of storytelling better than Valve does.....

Ok, I beat Extraction Point.  Pretty awesome, but the ending sucked.  And it seemed a lot less scary than the original.

Now, on the other hand, the firefights were totally badass.

I think I found it scarier because I hadn't gamed in so long. It along with Prey was the first shooter I played on my new system. Yea I loved the firefights, but at the end I think F.E.A.R. needs to really expand its horizons in any sequel.

I am still waiting on Monolith to announce what will be "Their" FEAR 2. It won't be called FEAR 2, b/c their publisher Sierra owns the rights to the actual FEAR brand name. I wonder what Lith's FEAR 2 will actually be called....

Though, at least, 'Lith owns all the characters and storyline rights....

Practically every game that ever gets an expansion gets a gold edition, that didn't really need its own thread.  Topics merged.

Works for me.

I did find it interesting that people who buy the Gold Edition will get the "Director's Edition (DVD)" in the Gold Edition box, instead of the usual multi-disc CD edition.

That's cool.

I have the Director's Ed, myself. One DVD beats multiple CD's.

What a retarded sentence from Jason Ocampo...

That sounds so dumb, like it is some paranormal investigation game. For the record your protagonist is nothing like Mulder or Scully. Heck he never even talks!
