If a manufacturer is setting out to make a good car for pretty cheap it can be done pretty easily with very little traded away.  It's probably just around 100hp, no automatic models, and has little sound proofing, but that shit doesn't matter for a commuter car really.  Save a ton on R&D by using technology you've already implemented into your cars and haven't had any problem with for the last 4 or 5 years, and use a lot of standard parts.  It's basically how Toyota got a foothold in the global market and look how they're doing now.

The problem is that American car companies try to compete with cars like the Neon, and the design philosophy behind it is not what people are looking for (trade reliability for aesthetic value and a little extra power).  That just kills their company reputation.

Anyways, the Logan is viewed as a huge success in Europe, with demand far higher than supply, so this is probably a pretty good area for Toyota to get into.

That would be awesome. I've always wondered why nobody has done this.

It's kinda what the Tercel originally was (but not really since the tercel technically fit in between the Corolla and some other car that must have been really fucking cheap).  It got super popular because it was kind of in it's own price class, but was eventually discontinued in 99 because for whatever reason they couldn't produce it at that price point anymore (I think because of the popularity more people kept on wanting different options and the line eventually became something entirely different).

Personally, I'm a huge tercel fan.  Cheap as hell, one of the most reliable used cars you can buy, and parts cost nothing (same with any repair you can't do).  There's a bit of a cult following for them since they're not made anymore and a lot of people regret selling their old ones when they 'moved' up in the world since it's hard to find that kind of piece of mind and super low upkeep with other cars.

I wondered why car companies didnt have the "cheap model"...the car design that they use for several years at a time. Like the old VW Beatles were made from 1938 to 2003 with only minor changes for most of that time. That can only help drive costs down as opposed to releasing a new model with new styling requiring new machines...every single year.

They usually have major model revisions every four or so years.  I assume that after the first year the cost of production drops rapidly but the price point stays the same so they just pocket the difference.  All the little unnecessary modifications (aesthetic...not safety or mechanical) in the mean time are the kinds of thing that cost them nothing...new trim or headlights...that kind of thing.
