The only thing of note I ever got to test was
Battle Isle - The Andosia War.  There were several other pretty cool games in the series and also the almost entirely unknown
DarkSpace which actually did a little online pioneering for its time.  Anyway, Andosia War wasn't that great, but I also didn't think it was quite as bad as GSpot's reviewer seemed to think.  It was a decent enough game and pretty fun at the time.  The main reason I got into it was mostly because of its pseudo-link to
Incubation, which I was a *huuuge* fan of at the time.  One of the first online communities I ever belonged to was called "Geo's Incubation Site" or something like that, a site run by the aforesaid Geo.  It was a pretty cool little group of enthusiasts, and the game's community was very small, so it was cool to have a nice little group to screw around with.  He moved on to other strategy games, but honestly, that was one of the last really good ones of its ilk that I can think of.  There's been very little in the way of turn-based, squad strategy in a long, long time, let alone anything of value.
