I WANT ANOTHER WING COMMANDER DAMNIT
« on: Saturday, February 03, 2007, 12:23:33 PM »
I've been watching Battlestar, and it is pretty fantastic. I really enjoyed the first season but the second is blowing me away. The whole religion crap is a bit heavy though, but oh well.

Anyway every time I see a space dog fight, I feel like popping in WC. We need another space sim with an epic storyline. There is a massive market for this, so WTF?

I don't know that there's a massive market.  There's people clamoring, but I don't think they're the majority of the market by any means.  I don't think they ever have been, either, or at least not for a long, long time.  This is a much more niche market from my point of view.

You are probably right considering there hasn't been a sci fi epic in a long while. I said massive market because I know there are plenty of fans of sci fi movies and stuff, so I assumed these people would want to play a game.

I want one.

I also want a proper ninja stealth game.

Maybe they can do both together.

NINJAS IN SPACE!

edit:

Anyone know how Star Wars Galaxies turned out?

Hey, I could go for a good one too, but... eh.  It seems the genre is being kept alive by a few franchises, but none of them are quite what people want.  Though I *did* love the X games.  Well, the second one, as that's all I played.  But I can't imagine the third being lousy.

No way is X3 lousy. NO way.

I ain't played X2...
...but X3: Reunion is AWESOME! The game is like Oblivion or Morrowind, but in FREAKIN' SPACE! It's really awesome. I loved Freelancer and all -- but this game is probably even better; yeah, WAY better. Keep in mind, I thought Freelancer was outstanding....yeah, that's how great I think X3 is....

Pug, if you want a great Space Sim, go grab X3: Reunion 2.0 DVD Edition.

If anyone is going to get X3, I recommend you get the X3: Reunion 2.0 DVD Edition, which includes on the disc (the free expansion) The Bala Gi Missions on there. Usually, most places, the DVD and 6 CD editions are the same price; usually $20. This way, you can avoid a lot of issues I went through w/ the original 6 CD Edition -- keep in mind, I paid $5 for my original 6 CD edition AND I didn't know a DVD Ed was planned; If I knew a DVD Ed was planned, I would've waited....

Here's why I'd recommend the X3: Reunion 2.0 DVD Edition over the original 6 CD Edition.

1.Bala Gi Missions included on DVD Edition
W/ the X3: Reunion 2.0 DVD Edition, you ain't got to download the extra missions patch from their site.
If you own the original X3: Reunion version, you will have to download these new missions since they're included in a recent patch, BTW.

2.ONE DVD beats 6 CD's
If you get that new X3: Reunion 2.0 DVD Edition, you don't have to deal w/ 6 freakin' CD's. Nuff said.

3.Missing Audio Files on 6 CD Edition
In the new X3: Reunion 2.0 DVD Edition, you won't have to deal w/ this bullshit at all -- you're all set!!!
But, in the original 6 CD edition, there's some missing audio files that didn't wind up on the CD's. So, you will need to download these files from their site separately; they're on their message boards here w/ instructions of where to place these files(click here!). When doing the installation from the 6 CD Edition, you have to SKIP installing those audios file on the install -- or else the install WILL FAIL. How do you do this, since the game will keep asking for the audio files to "Retry or Abort" if you have the same CD in there? Well, by putting the next CD in, instead. Then, once you finish doing the install, you go to the site I mentioned and download them. Then, you have to place the audio files in the right folder. Joyous, eh? Shitty, if you ask me.

4.StarForce Drivers are NOT on new X3: Reunion 2.0 DVD Edition!
The new X3: Reunion 2.0 DVD Edition DOESN'T contain StarForce -- PERIOD.
Whereas, the original 6 CD Edition comes w/ StarForce. One of the newest patches, though, removes the need of StarForce CD Check, so you don't even need the CD's anymore for booting the game up, if you own the original 6 CD edition. Though, the StarForce drivers are still on your PC, they just lie there pretty much doing nothing.

I just may take your advice MyD :) I've been looking forward to seeing X3 in action, and the more videos and screenshots I see the more I wanna play it.

A new Wing Commander game would be awesome!

The X3 deal has me interested D, but I have never played the first two, so would that hinder my enjoyment? Or would I enjoy it even more since it would be very fresh for me?

edit:

I bet D will enjoy answering this. :)

I ain't played X1 or X2.
X3 is my first jump into the X universe -- and yes, it's awesome!

I'm sure someone who has played both previous X games and X3 could answer this better than I could, since I ain't played X1 or X2.

I don't know much of the X story history and all, but X3 rocks.

The story and such isn't nearly as engaging as the empire-building and I-guess-you'd-call-them-RPG aspects.  Think Oblivion in space, except you can make money by trading, buy new ships, outfit a fleet, go pirate hunting with your fleet, automate ships to defend or trade, and generally just build up an assload of factories, stations, and ships.  Or you can just keep buying better ships and doing stuff on your own if you'd like.  Or you can fly around in your ship while you have other automated ships doing stuff.  It's really pretty limitless, and the story (at least in X2) was kinda'... whatever.  It wasn't terrible or anything, but it probably won't be what you're playing for, and you can more or less choose to completely ignore it.  I assume this is the same deal with X3.

Yeah -- X3, you can pretty much do all of the above you mention.

Like Oblivion, you can IGNORE the main quest and go about your thing. The game don't force you to take the main quest, like Oblivion. The game's world is huge -- and you can probably spend forever playing it, if you like.

Pretty much, yeah. The main quest is good, but ain't nothing to write home about....
Though, I did find the main quest stuff, what I did do, quite fun and worthwhile. :)

I do need to give this game more time. I spend more time on my own, doing non-main quest stuff...

Since we been on Sim games, I could go for a MechWarrior 5, myself.....

Personally, I like MW, but I also like their Mercenaries editions. Me, I could go for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries Edition, as well.

IGN has a list of PC Games that ain't been released that they would love to see, wonder if they are in development, or wonder what actually happened to a game that might've been cancelled -- basically, a list of MIA Games....

Quote
MechWarrior 5
Developer: FASA Interactive
Publisher: Microsoft

What Was Promised
The MechWarrior franchise has always been one of the PC's most beloved Mech-combat series. After MechWarrior 4 released in 2000, fans immediately began clamoring for a sequel. Developer FASA Interactive listened to their pleas and began work on a sequel to the game. Several years later, multiple expansions for MechWarrior 4 had been released, but still MechWarrior 5 was nowhere to be found.

Where It Stands
Back in 2003, a developer at FASA interactive made a post on the company's message boards regarding the fate of the game. At the time, he claimed that it was being cancelled due some problems with the game's quality, but IGN later learned that it was because resources were being diverted to developing and maintaining the MechAssault games. We hadn't heard anything about the game for four long years until we contacted Microsoft for comment this week. The Microsoft spokesman on hand had no idea about the fate of the project other than that it had been cancelled long before he started at the company. He admitted that while there was the possibility of reviving the franchise sometime in the future, the game would not likely resemble its former self.

I have such a complete picture in my head about what the perfect Battletech game would be that I almost don't want Mechwarrior 5 to ever be made because it'll never come close to that picture. The masses that most of these games seem to be made for would probably hate it (if those people exist or not is actually up to debate at this point) and the actual feel of, what I consider, real Battletech is pretty different from where they've taken the series since Mechwarrior 3. Things have gotten shiner and more techy, which is the opposite of my favorite parts of the universe. I'd want the "old" part of the universe where big, lumbering hulks literally kill each other in one to three shots and after hundreds of years of constant warfare the only technology to remain is either completely robust or under the service of the most genius technicians ever. Don't get me wrong, I love the Clans and the early Clan invasion is probably the most interesting part of the universe, but I don't like how games feel after they were beaten back and all the sudden everyone had tons of super powerful fast Mechs and gear. There were so many good Mechs in the new stuff, yet they all lacked a certain presence that the older stuff had. I guess it's sorta like looking at modern planes and compairing them to WWII ones, but I couldn't give a rat's ass about advancing technology in a fictional universe when the older stuff is just cooler.

Besides, even with Mechwarrior 2 and Mechwarrior 2:Mercs, it's not like the Inner Sphere Wars and initial Clan Invasion have still been given a proper shake in the video game side of things. Like I said though, I doubt it'll ever happen. Mech Assult is proof of that. I'd almost say it'd be better for them to keep making stuff like that then try to get back into what Battletech used to and should be.

Well I checked out Gamespot's excellent review of X3. Your "Oblivion in space" comment seems to describe the game very well, except it seems to be much slower.

Well, the main X3 storyline is probably not as good as say Oblivion's.

Maybe, X3's more like "Morrowind in space," since the game ain't too focused on the main quest. Oblivion does make it easy for you to stick w/ the main quest, if you choose to -- unlike Morrowind.
