Smokin' Aces (No Spoilers)
« on: Sunday, February 11, 2007, 11:06:33 AM »
I got blazed and saw this movie last night, even though it wasn't the action movie I thought it would be, it had some great dialog and comedy moments. I thought some of the characters, as well as the movie itself were drawn out a little too much. The best way I can describe this movie is "Tarantino with more action", I know it sounds good on paper but it isn't.

The action in the film is very sparse and quick, it tries too hard to rely on style other than substance. The most entertaining characters (other than Piven) are given short screen time, like The Tremor Brothers or Jason Bateman who owned his 4 minute scene better than anyone has owned a scene this year. I don't know why, but Alicia Keys is given a lot of time, even though her character LITERALLY does nothing.

The biggest disappointment of the movie was the buildup of the "big showdown" (which literally had 20 minutes of buildup) and was over with in about 5 minutes. The movie didn't exactly deliver on the big showdown, but the action was decent and you get a nice twist at the end. When this comes out on DVD, rent it and don't buy.

The general consensus seems to be that it's shit.  I have no plans on watching it.

As an actor, he's not so great, but I personally didn't think he sucked. As a rapper/actor, he's better than most, his character becomes cheesy at the end though.

I'm gonna go ahead and throw in my two cents, and those say this movie is awesome. I've seen it three times now. It isn't really an action movie - the trailers are misleading, and that's the problem. It's more of a comedy with action sequences, and only one really big one, but most of it is suspense and buildup - think a funny Die Hard. Alicia Keys is surprisingly good in it, and Jeremy Piven is great. It's one of those movies you'll quote for ages, particularly the "Bones it - now padlock it..." bit.

This movie has nothing on Die Hard, action or comedy wise. It had some really cool scenes in it (like the Tremor bros meeting Affleck, the elavator scene and Soot changing his voice), but it wasn't enough to warrant a $10 movie ticket. I hate movie that cut away from the action, which is all this film did. It would show the start of the action, go to something else and when it came back the action scenes were almost over. I'd only watch this again as a rental to show to my friends, otherwise this movie has no other value.

Do I think this movie was misleading w/ its trailers? Yes. It's more comedy than action. And the previews pretty much gave it that "action/comedy" feel, not the "comedy/action" feel.

Good job, marketing department... *Sarcasm*

Did I like this movie?
Yes. It's good, but nothing special. Nothing great.
Worth renting, though.

Is there some dead air here and there?
Yeah, unfortunately...some dialogues go on for too long...

Is some of the dialogue good?
Yes, when it doesn't go on too long...

I wish there was more time spent on the psycho boys. Them 3, Jason Bateman, and Piven stole the show, pretty much.

The action, when it happened, was pretty good.

Though, Tarantino knows how to keep his dialogue going, to keep the viewer's eyes and ears paying attention -- even when they go on and on, it never feels like it. That's the key.

His dialogues never really feel too long, in most instances -- even when they do go on for quite the while. I always thought Tarantino was a master at making great dialogues, though. Hell, just look at Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill Volume 2.

The best dialogue writers are Tarantino and Spike Lee. Lee has more intelligent conversations between his characters, but Tarantino has better comedic interactions between his characters. I would love to see a movie where Jules and Vincent just talk about shit for two hours.

I just saw it and thought it was ok at best. The big plot twist wasn't that surprising aside from maybe one thing...I dunno.....Overall, it was just meh.
