Anyone doing the Lent thing?
« on: Wednesday, February 21, 2007, 07:02:53 AM »
I am not religious, but I have been looking for an excuse to quit smoking, and this is the perfect one.  So I am giving up cigarettes.  I threw away my pack and my lighter and everything.  I'm good to go.  Only been smoking for about 6 months now, so I don't think I am chemically addicted.

Is anyone else giving up anything?

quitting is an admittance that you were wrong in the first place, and i maintain that smoking is awesome.

I did it once just to compare and contrast it with Muslim fasting. It was basically being a vegetarian/vegan for 40 days. Although I also added mental discipline to the mix (no cussing, no anger, no sexual conduct, etc.).

That's not very nice.

It is like offering someone ice cream and then snatching it away. :(

I'm horrible.  I consider myself Catholic in most of my beliefs, but I didn't even know it was Ash Wednesday today!  Here I am walking back from the cafeteria at work to the break area by my department with a bacon cheeseburger in hand and I pass a guy with ash marks on his head.  I'm like, "Holy shit!  I'm terrible!  I didn't even know it was ash Wednesday!"

P.S.:  The bacon cheeseburger was awesome.

Ah, well, I just ate a cheesburger minutes before visiting this thread. I've always been bad about the no meat thing. Last year I gave up smoking pot (was indulging heavily at the time) and it actually had lasting effects. I barely smoke now, and I usually enjoy it more since I rarely do it. Don't know what I'm going to give up this year. Maybe cussing.

I gave up smoking after doing it for three years...I only made it a couple of months. Maybe I should've tried to ease myself off smoking instead of quitting cold turkey. People say the few days are bad, which they are, but just wait after about a month.

When I quit smoking (cigarettes), the first two weeks sucked real bad.  The first few days were kind of bad and then the cravings were horrible after the third day or so.  After two weeks it subsided a bit, with pretty frequent cravings through a month.  It wasn't easy.  After two months it became much easier.

I'm going on about 2 and a half years nicotine free, and I'd be lying if I said every once in awhile I wouldn't mind having a smoke or a dip.  But it's not bad at all and these cravings are really infrequent and usually remedied by running into a smoker coming in from break.

I tend to quit for fairly long periods of time without much issue.  I think I've actually about kicked it this time.  Not sure how long it's been but I just don't feel like smoking at all at this point.  Except in social circumstances.  Thankfully I'm a recluse.
