Does this make me stupid
« on: Thursday, February 22, 2007, 11:28:47 PM »
given the option between $20/ under the table (+ a fairly sizeable weekly performance bonus) basically working for myself and $15/hr taxable and working for someone else I'm seriously considering the second option?

With the complete lack of information you are giving us? Yes.

Come on, there have to be factors that are making you consider the latter.

Well, the main thing is I could learn more at the $15/hr job, and it'd be at the same location for months at a time copaired to the other option which changes locations about every week.  It might be more useful for what I'll be taking after finishing my degree, but that's not really an issue.

More than anything I just kind of want a change.

Well, it sounds like a personal decision to me. Is the -$5 an hour+ worth the experience / travel? I can relate to wanting a change, this is often times a good thing.

I haven't told many people this, but I am going to join the marines after I graduate college (in a year and a few months). This is due to many reasons, most of which I won't go into here. But is part of it simply wanting a change? Sure. Change is often times a good thing, if it is done for the right reasons.

The marines?  On one hand, they're waaay cooler than the Navy.  On the other, that's because they do waaaay more dangerous shit.  What would you want to be trained as?

My dad was in the marines. My cousin was in the marines and sent to iraq. Before he enlisted, my dad gave him some advice:

Dont join the marines. If you dont listen and you still join...whatever job you signed up for, prepare to never get it.

Just relaying the info, I'm personally not going to stop you from joining...no objections here. And when you get out that uniform = free beer and pussy everywhere.

I'm going to go in as an officer since I will have graduated college. No clue what I am going to be trained in. I need to start preparing for it first (working out and whatnot). I am in good shape now but nowhere near where I want to be. I am a good shot with firearms so I am not worried about that. I'm just hoping that we will be out of Iraq (well, pulling out at least) by the time I join. This isn't false hope- it's very much a reality based on who is the next president.

Edit for Idol: I'm not worried about the free beer and pussy. Nor do I have any illusions about the marines or any job thereof. I really do want to serve my country, in whatever manner. This may sound cliche, but whatever. It's true.

I almost joined Marines OCS after I graduated, in the end I backed out.  The commitment and uncertainty were just too much for me. Are you planning to be a ground officer or a pilot?

For whatever its worth, I work with a guy who was an Army officer.  He describes his job as being a Babysitter.

Raisa my good buddy is in the Air Force, he was trying to convince me to join them. I see where he is coming from but don't know if I'll bite.

And Ant, I really don't know what I'm going to do yet. I have 20/15 vision but have slight astigmatism. Dunno how that would factor in the pilot thing.
