Weird.  An underground coal fire that's burned for 45 years?  Never heard of it.

I've heard of it, but I don't recall where.  But yeah, it's interesting stuff.

Apparently they based the Silent Hill movie's version of the town on this town and another one I can't recall that had something similar happen, but yeah, its pretty damn crazy.

In case you didn't know, this is the town the Film version of Silent Hill was Fashioned after.

Also, my Stepfather was one of the workers who worked on slowing the spread of the fire in the 90's... He used to come home covered in Fly Ash (Hot, sooty, and EXTREMELY Bad for the lungs).

9th comment on that page.  Interesting.  How does a fire like that get oxygen for so long?

I've never heard of anything like this before. I had often toyed with the idea of a fire burning out of control under a toy for a story but I didn't it could happen! That is so cool in a odd way. The video said that there was still like 15 people living there  :o are they crazy!

Good question. I assumed it was fairly near the surface and the fissures fed the fire. That's just my guess, though.

Coal can be very slow burning and I'd guess it doesn't need as much oxygen as, say, wood to have a sustained burn going.  I'd imagine it's kind of like a peat fire.  Once that starts to get underground there's less oxygen exposed to it, so it smoulders rather then straight up burns.  I can last for as long as there is fuel to burn in this state since there is still oxygen present, but not enough for the fire to burn itself out quickly.

I'm guessing with this a lot of oxygen was originally present due to the mine shafts and such, which let the fire burn hot enough to open the cracks and fissures.  Once that got going there's enough oxygen flowing through the area to allow a smoldering fire.  Look at the damage and think about how long this has been aparently going on for.  This is a very very slow burning fire.

Haha, I followed the "Abandoned Places" link at the bottom.  Neat stuff.  Too bad I don't know Spanish though.  I did use the Google translator though and I found the following comment particularly amusing.  It was a comment on a page of abandoned and dilapidated American fast food restaurants.

Penita, safe what that their faithful clients of fat people died all, was one season in which several explosions were listened to the day because the users of mcdonalds burst, now finished the explosions and had to close hamburguesería.

That one, right?  Let's see . . .

"What a shame (with a derisive diminutive), for sure that all its faithful clients died of obesity (from being fatsos, more literally), there was a period of time during which various explosions could be heard per day because the MacDonald's users were bursting, now the explosions are over and they had to close down the burger joint."

Ha!  Nasty grammar, but funny.

I'd love to go visit that place.

I guess it's one of those things that prove the heat in the earth's core.

Hey, nice to see everyone again.

I've been there. I was on a road trip to somewhere with my dad when I was little. We were going somewhere else, but we took a detour to stop by. They wont let you into the town. All the roads to it are blocked off. This was about 10 years ago.
