Anyone here play Saints Row?
« on: Tuesday, April 03, 2007, 11:43:33 AM »
I don't know why I had the impression that Saints Row had been panned.  I was puttering around online when I happened across the generally positive reviews, including from then Gamespot's Kasavin.  I love good GTA clones, and I recently played Crackdown to death.  Any firsthand experiences here?

I was interested in trying it, but I never did in the end.  I believe there's a demo for it on XBL though.

I heard over and over how it was nothing new but still good to play. I was thinking about picking this up, but I'd rather get Dead Rising if I can find it on the cheap!

Thanks.  I found the demo on XBL & downloaded it.  We lost power a while ago, and I'm going to wait until this unsettled weather goes by before I turn my 360 back on.

I played the demo . . . aaaaand . . . it's a disappointment.  Whatever you may think of Crackdown's depth, it has definitely set the bar technically and in my opinion, also for interface with the player.  The Saints Row demo has a comparatively crappy frame rate and glitch rate, plus it doesn't come close in terms of the brilliance in the control scheme and responsiveness of Crackdown.  It almost feels like the game was developed with an old digital gamepad in mind.  Nothing feels progressive.  That awesome feeling of direct involvement with all actions is absent.  It's not just a matter of getting used to the controls.  I wasn't used to Crackdown's when I first tried it either, but full immersion was nearly instant.  Here, I tried for a good hour before throwing in the towel.  I cannot follow the terrific Crackdown experience with Saints Row.  I wonder if it would have gotten nearly the scores that it did had it been released after Crackdown instead of last year.  I'll pass unless I can find it very cheap.

And you should consider the fact that Crackdown didn't really get great reviews.  Well, at least in comparison to SR.  That throws a monkey wrench into the whole thing.  Regardless, I haven't tried SR and have zero desire to at this point.

Saint's Row 2 will be coming in 2008 for X360 and PS3.

It'll be inside the EGM Nov. 2007 issue, by the way.

Quote
Saints Row 2 will take place in the same city, but as you'd expect, with far more detail than the last go round. Additionally, the popular multiplayer features are receiving an overhaul -- online co-op and a multiplayer-specific version of the city of Stilwater, anyone? For plenty more, check out the new EGM!
A Co-Op and MP Mode for SR2.....now that could be interesting...

Saints Row 2 might be bound for the PC, rumor has it.

Hmmm...I still wonder if will we ever get Saint's Row 1 on the PC...?

Saints Row 2 PCs [June 02, 2008, 10:04 am ET] - 12 Comments

A new Saints Row 2 German Product Section is online (thanks Gamer's Hell), which lists the PC as one of the target platforms for the upcoming open-world action sequel. We were not previously aware that a PC edition of the game, which was announced for Xbox 360 and PS3, is in the works, but the PC is also listed on the game's English product section, and there are e-tailer listings for a PC SKU on sites like Amazon.com and GameStop.com.

I never really thought of these games as anything more than GTA Jr.

I tried the demo to the first one and was wholly unimpressed.

Jeezus, D.  Of course I know why they made it.  It wasn't a comment that begged for a response.  My point is that it's a shitty knock-off franchise from a dev that could and should be doing better things.

Just saw a TV commercial today for Saints Row 2, which was playing Eazy-E's "Real Compton City G's (Real MuthaF'n G's)" song right along to it.

I could've mistaken this trailer for GTA: SA, if I wasn't paying attention too much. :P

I enjoyed it well enough.  Well, what I played of it.  I imagine I'll end up getting the second eventually.

And that song list is phenomenal in my opinion.  Lots of good songs/artists there.  Much better than GTA's, actually.

Even though PS2 and X360 versions of SR2 came out today...
PC version release date for Saints Row 2 = unknown now.

'No Official Word' on Saints Row 2 PC Release Date
by Chris Faylor Oct 14, 2008 1:13pm CST tags: Saints Row 2

While the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions of Volition's open-world gangster action game Saints Row 2 head off to retailers today, publisher THQ has informed Shacknews that it still doesn't know when the PC version will hit.

"There is no official word on the PC ship date other than that it doesn't ship today," explained a THQ representative. The PC version was confirmed earlier this year. No date was provided, though retailers listed a simultaneous release for PC and consoles.

Packing online cooperative play throughout the entirety of its campaign along with a variety of multiplayer modes, Saints Row 2 will sell for $60 on consoles.

Saints Row 3 confirmed already

Quote
As for Saints Row 3, the confirmation of a third entry in the series is far more direct. Speaking to Play, associate producer Dan Sutton explains how Saints Row 2 ties up any loose story threads, and drops the sequel revelation in the process: "Well, we knew a lot of people were upset with the last one because they were playing it and it was like 'oh gosh, I've got to wait for the next one,' but in SR2 we tie-up a lot of loose ends. I think we tie it up deliberately. We've already started work on Saints Row 3, and we have a new direction we want to go in with that which we of course can't talk about. We wrap up a lot in this one. There's no frustration."

EDIT:
Here's a link to that interview w/ Dan Sutton from Play.TM

Saints Row 2 PC Version has been delayed so the company (Volition) gets more time to get it right on the PC, basically.

Quote
[October 30, 2008, 10:00 am ET]
Saints Row 2 PC in January

Saints Row 2 PC Delayed to 2009 reports IGN, saying January 6, 2009 is the release date for the Windows edition of Saints Row 2, Volition's open-world action sequel. They call this a delay for this edition of the game, which shipped for consoles earlier this month, though we weren't aware the PC edition actually had a set release date.

In any event, they confirmed this release date for the project with THQ after it was first revealed by a community moderator, and they have several quotes from that moderator that reflect the approach to this port: "The PC version was delayed because we wanted to make the highest quality game across all platforms, but it just needed more time," and "The PC version is still being produced and tested at Volition with support from the design and programming teams as needed. This is in no way a hands-off external port of the game."

Specifically he says "One other time factor is coordinating the new control scheme from controller to mouse/keyboard. While the 360 controller will be fully supported for PC play, you will also be able to map your keyboard / mouse controls as you see fit."

Lots of info on Saints Rows 2 PC.
All this info is from a community manager at Volition, Inc.

Retail copies of the game REQUIRE Steam.
Steam is the game's DRM.

Quote
I've received permission to post up the PC Specs, so here we go!

First and foremost, an internet connection is required to play.

Minimum Requirements:
- Windows XP / Vista
- 2.0 GHz Dual-Core Processor (Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon X2)
- 1 GB Available System Memory
- 15 GB Available Hard Drive Space
- 128 MB 3D Video Card w/Shader Model 3.0 Support (Nvidia GeForce 7600 / ATI Radeon X1300)
- DirectX Compatible Display Capable of 640x480 16-bit Color Resolution
- DirectX 9.0c Compatible 16-bit Sound Card
- Broadband Connection for Internet Multiplayer

Recommended Requirements:
- Windows XP / Vista
- 3.2 GHz Dual-Core Processor (Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon X2)
- 2 GB Available System Memory
- 256 MB 3D Video Card with Shader Model 3.0 Support (Nvidia GeForce 8800 / ATI Radeon HD3850)
- DirectX Compatible Display Capable of 1024x768 in 32-bit Color
- DirectX 9.0c Compatible 16-bit Sound Card
- Recommended System Requirements Required for 2-12 Player Multiplayer or Co-Op

Remember to update your drivers now to avoid hassle later on.

In regards to the game requiring Steam...
Quote
The Internet connection is required on install to verify the game through Steam, which we are using for our non-invasive DRM. It has nothing at all to do with spyware, and everything to do with authentication of your product.

Quote
Once you've authenticated, you can then select "Play Offline" thereafter and will only require a connection for multiplayer.

For Multi-Player
Quote
We will be using GameSpy, not GFWL.

That depends on how its used. Fallout 3 uses it and unless you told me I'd have no idea. Even the online activation crap with Spore and the like, outside of that first registration I doubt you even notice it.

Steam? I know when that slow piece of shit is running.

That depends on how its used. Fallout 3 uses it and unless you told me I'd have no idea.
Fallout 3 doesn't require activation, though -- thankfully.

I should be specific here -- I'm targeting the Securom Internet Version. I've had issues with that.

I've never had issues with the Non-Internet Securom disc protection. Can't speak for the rest of the world, though.

Even the online activation crap with Spore and the like, outside of that first registration I doubt you even notice it.
I've had trouble with both Bioshock and AITD 2008, trying to get them activated and everything -- took my numerous tries to get either going. I can understand Bioshock on Day One, having trouble activating it -- b/c everybody and their cousin was probably slamming the servers. Funniest one was AITD 2008, as nobody was buying this game on the PC and the game was already out for a good few months -- yet it took me numerous tries to get that one activated.  ???

Can't say the same for Far Cry 2. Somehow, that Securom-protected game activated no problem via Securom, when I activated it last weekend.

V-Singular of Volition has word that with the Steam client, THQ and Valve are working out issues to get it out there for an online digital distribution of SR2 PC (to buy-to-download it from Steam).

Though, buy SR2 through your retail store, you should be able to authenticate that copy of the game okay over Steam.

Re: SOME NEWS on the PC version...
Update

I've received some word back and it appears that we have experienced some issues with the Steam client and both THQ and Valve are working on the issue and hope to have it resolved soon.

This delay does not affect the retail version (in-store) of Saints Row 2 PC, but the game will not be available for digital download off of Steam today.

Again, anyone who picks up a boxed copy today will be able to authenticate and play SR2 once installed.

Wow, this thread brought back memories... Crackdown.  My experience was a bit like yours, Cobra.  I found controls and technical aspects of the game flawless.  Even though driving around wasn't all that much fun, I loved climbing and jumping all over the city.  Unfortunately, beyond that the depth of the game was paper thin.  There was climbing to get the symbols, and the missions, and races, and... well that was it.  I burned out on it real quick and sold it on eBay.

Ha!  Yes, memories.  I love Crackdown.  I couldn't get enough of running around kicking ass and leveling up the character.  I played through under several profiles, with as many different skins.  I kept the demo for a very long time because it's a way to play a quick version of the game.  Recently I needed the space, so I finally deleted it.

I too loved that game.  It's really kind of stupid on some levels, but just the huge playground with so much to find and fiddle with is great.  I played through it twice, but didn't beat it either time.  I was a fiend just for exploring and jumping on everything.  Actually completing the game really didn't mean much.

I kinda skipped over most of this thread just because I want to ask about Saint's Row 2 and not the first, and didn't want to make a new thread. Any opinions on it? I've been kinda feeling like a sandbox game and was considering GTA4, esp with the addon pack coming soon. The ZP and Gspot reviews for SR2 have me considering it instead though. It just sounds a lot more free and a lot more offensive, both of which are huge pluses for me.

No clue; ain't played it.
I'll probably buy SR2 PC, when it gets cheaper.
SR2 PC requires Steam, regardless of what version of you buy (Retail or Steam).

Did the SR2 PC get a demo?

I have been playing SR2 PC today. I'll give you some impressions on it.

SR2 is probably the best GTA-series clone I've played. I did like True Crime: NYC PC, but it wasn't great -- it was decent, though. I must say, the license music in TC: NYC PC was great. TC: NYC PC had some performance issues, yet looks nowhere as good as SR2 PC. SR2 PC runs even better than TC: NYC PC did.

About SR2 PC, the performance is on my PC all over the place. Quite often, it's fine (especially indoors) -- but put too much on screen when outdoors and it's gonna slow-down and stutter a little bit. Not game-breaking, though. I got most of the stuff on Medium settings on 800x600, since it ran consistently horrible on 1024x768 no matter what settings I had the game set at.

I like the customization of your character at the opening of SR2 PC -- you could be there all day, configuring your character you try to look like you; somebody you know; or however you want to. It's something I do wish GTA series did, actually.

SR2's voice-acting is actually good. I didn't know what to expect there -- but so far, it's good. Story hasn't really got too far going, as I'm trying to rebuild the Saints Row gang up from scratch -- since most of them are either dead or in jail (according to the game).

But, the action is pretty good; controls are pretty good and as customizable as can be (for me, I use KB/mouse when shooting, X360 pad when driving -- and it works great); and there looks like there's a hell of a lot to do and actually unlock in this game-world. The missions look like the usual GTA-esque of fanfare for missions -- killing people, recruiting people, etc; though, if a mission has numerous pieces to to, there are actual auto-saves for when you do "part" of a long mission. I've just been driving around here and there, doing side missions and unlocking locations and stuff -- and it's been pretty enjoyable.

So far, SR2 PC is pretty fun. It looks like it'll be worth my $20 + cheap shipping (from Gogamer), so it looks like, once all is said and done.
