For shame!

It is pretty nifty the PSP is. Has so many functions that I don't need and won't use, like video and mp3 playback... but cool none the less. Also wi fi is pretty cool, but again what am I going to do with it?

I got a few games including Daxter, Tekken: Dark Resurrection, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Burnout Legends and Liberty Stories. I really wanted Lumines II, but they only had Lumines I so I wait.

Overall I am more than pleased.

Well...you fucked up. Luckily, the PSP is the best for emulation and warez. As long as you don't buy any games for it you should be ok with it.

Well they said they will buy the PSP at $35 less whenever I am done with it. I got the games mostly used but in excellent condition.

I also got a 2GB disc.

But yea I will pick up a DS eventually.

Get Lumines.  That game is the only reason I kept mine as long as I did.  I know Lumines 2 is available, but its not Lumines 1.

I kind of want a PSP myself. Its just a shame the battery life isnt that great. I'd love to play Pirates! and Lumines on car trips. Plus all the emulators and such would be awesome.

I'm not sure about the status of the battle between Sony's firmware updates and the hackers responses.  Last I heard, Sony had even tried modifying the motherboard itself to prevent hacked firmware.  Emulation and piracy were the only things going for the PSP last time I dealt with the system.  Does your PSP have the latest hardware & firmware?  Can it actually handle DevHook?

It has the latest firmware and it is handling devhook beautifully. I am so happy with this! I can't believe a handheld can be so awesome. I have been at Virtua Tennis for the past five hours! On the PSP! Awesome stuff.

Also I had a question. I haven't purchased Lumines yet. Is the first one really better than the second, or is it a case of don't buy the second if you have the first? I don't have either, so I naturally assumed that Lumines 2 would be the logical choice despite having scored lower.

Was it GPW who loved Disgaea? It is finally hitting the PSP says GSPOT

I liked Disgaea, Pug and I think Que and/or Sy liked it too.  Also consider picking up Loco Roco, that game is so awesome, I highly enjoyed playing it when my brother brought his PSP over to my place.  Mercury is another neat puzzle game and you might want to check that one out at some point too.

I would say that generally speaking, you're going to regret buying a PSP.  I have one and it sits there collecting dust.  I used to play it quite a bit, but at this point, it does not see much use.

Pug, check out pspvideo9.  It will convert almost any movie file you have to MPEG4 or the other PSP format.

The only thing I am regretting currently is the pain in my thumbs. I was playing the thing for six hours straight and my thumbs hurt at the base.

Well they have a new God of War game coming as well for the PSP. Hope that is good.

I'd definitely get Lumines one way or another.     The 2nd is very good, but it does not upstage the 1st in playability.  The game itself is still pretty much the same.

Yeah, Get the original Lumines.  And Loco Roco definitely, I play the hell out of that one and love every minute of it.  Wipeout Pure is damned good for portable a racer, as is the PSP version of Test Drive Unlimited (see the TDU thread where I go into more detail).  I'd say either of those are worth a purchase.

But yeah, without emulation and such I wouldn't use my PSP half as much.  As it stands, I use it almost constantly for file transfer and for SNES/Genesis/PS1 games.  And, with the addition of Loco and TDU, I've even got some games to play.

6 months ago I'd say that you made a horrible choice, but now I think you made the right one.  I don't own either system, but I was reading a few threads on digg - a place that was 100% pro DS a while ago and noticed that the tide had changed a bit. 

The DS has some great first party games and a few good third party ones, but from what I gather it's much like an actual nintendo console in that respect - what's good is great, but there aren't a ton of good games coming out in a timely fashion.  The actual official releases for the PSP isn't any better (actually, it's aparently quite a bit worse), but that's not the strength of the system from the consumer standpoint - the strength is the homebrew.

I'll take a portable system that plays homebrew, psx, snes, nes, genesis/mega drive, GB, GBA, and whatever other games on it over one that just plays DS games any day. 

And no, I've never played Disagea or however you spell it, but I have played Valkerye Profile, and it is great.  Pick that one up or emulate it.

The Nethack port sucks.  Too many commands for too little buttons.  I couldn't figure out how to do hardly anything just because it was so convoluted.  It's really a nice port otherwise, too.  And I didn't try very hard, really... maybe you'd have better luck.

And I thought homebrew wasn't possible on the most recent firmwares?  Everything I've read recently said there were still no ways to downgrade with the more recent stuff.  And you have to be careful after the motherboard switch, too, as I hear trying some of the usual tricks will brick it.

And yes, I'm looking very, very forward to Disgaea.  I loved the PS2 game but never got super far just because there's so much crap you can do and it's so easy to get distracted.  I kept thinking it would make a great portable game because then I'd have more opportunity to fuck with it... so yeah, I absolutely can't wait for that to come out.

But in the end, I'd say the DS still wins by a landslide as a gaming platform.  The PSP truly sucks right now in that department and the DS has absolute gobs of games that I want to play by comparison.  The only thing that saves the PSP is the homebrew capability.  Without that, it loses the fight by a landslide.

Well I went to a hole in the wall where they install mod chips and hacks and stuff this morning. They installed the latest Dev Hook despite my PSP having the latest firmware and they installed some software that allows me to go back and forth between 3.11 and 1.5.

I'll probably pick up a DS in a month or so. One thing is that I don't have a playstation so some of those PS games I can experience on the PSP.

Before the successful hacked firmwares, 1.5 was the only way to have a fully open US-spec system.  There's a major exploit which allows anything to be run, even in kernel (system) mode.

I'm quite out of touch with the PSP scene.  I bet you if you type "PSP wallpaper" into Google or your favorite engine, you'll get a plethora of hits.

BTW I just got around to watching some videos on the PSP. They look amazing. I just saw the Spider-Man 3 trailer... looks awesome! I am very happy with this gadget so far.

Lately I'm playing a lot of Test Drive Unlimited for PSP and as of last night the Metal Slug Anthology (which is fucking awesome... Metal Slugs 1, 2, X, 3, 4, 5, and 6... all in one package with unlockable art and wallpapers and junk).  Still some Loco Roco, too.  Before that it was mostly just Wipeout Pure, Lumines, and lots of SNES stuff and some Genesis stuff (a lot of the latter I still can't get to work, which makes me sad).  Now I'm moving on to trying more PS1 games.  I played Silent Hill, Legend of Mana, some of Vagrant Story (which for some idiotic reason I still haven't been able to finish), Castlevania: SOTN, and am as we speak ripping the two PS Oddworld games.  Oh, and there's Sid Meier's Pirates! for the PSP which, while a little wonky with sound and graphics here and there, is an awesome port that plays perfectly.
