Damn! When I saw the thread title I immediately thought it was some tragedy, but then started thinking it was some pun about some gaming they were working on or something.

Anyway hope no one was working at that late hour.

Human Head speaks on their situation...

Quote
Human Head Follow-up [April 24, 2007, 10:24 am ET] - 9 Comments
The Human Head Website has a follow-up on last week's fire at their offices (story), saying this "speed bump" is not a huge setback:

As many of you know, the office building in which Human Head Studios is located suffered a significant fire early on Friday, April 20th.

We are relieved to report that no one was injured in the fire, and though we suffered some equipment and furniture loss due to smoke and water, we suffered no significant data loss, as the brunt of the fire was located in another part of the building.

We’re excited to let our concerned friends know that this speed bump won’t keep us from continuing our development of great new award-winning product. We will be relocating to a new office space for the short term, and we expect to be back in full development very soon.

We are working to have email communication back up later this week. Postal communication may still be sent to our old address and will be forwarded to us. You can still reach us by phone as well.

We’re very proud of the great team at Human Head, which has come together to clean up, clear out, and start rebuilding since word spread Friday morning,.

We would like to thank everybody for their understanding, encouragement, and patience as we recover.

Prey 2 is finally officially announced - and yes, Human Head's doing it.

Quote
Prey 2 Announced [March 17, 2008, 7:46 pm ET] - Viewing Comments
Following the release of some concept art, this PDF press release from the Radar Group Website offer the official announcement of the Radar Group (thanks IGN), as well as their three debut titles Earth No More, Incarnate, and Prey 2. Word on the Radar Group, comprised of industry vets like Jim Perkins and Scott Miller, is: "Original Thinking™ entertainment entity to incubate, manage and produce Intellectual Properties for cross-media leveraging in video game and film markets." Yes, their thinking is so original, it's trademarked. Here's word on Prey and the other two games: :

    Earth No More
Earth No More does away with the “lone-hero” shooter archetype, instead focusing on the dynamic between an ensemble cast that must learn to work together to survive the threat of an environmental extinction event. As Will Foster, a DHS chemical weapons specialist, you are among the first to respond to a gas attack on Washington, D.C. However, it soon becomes clear that the gas attack is a cover-up for something much more sinister. Earth No More is currently being developed in close collaboration with Recoil Games and is slated for release on next-gen consoles and PC.

    Incarnate
Incarnate poses the question: Can evil ever die? The re-incarnated souls of history’s most evil people are converging on present-day Chicago. As Thomas Ludlow, you are recruited by a secret organization to hunt down and capture these ‘Incarnates’. But the further you dig into the reasons for their arrival, the more you learn of the true nature of your efforts and your own connection to the events unfolding before you. Stalk your prey in the wide open city, search for them in the dark places, and maybe you will survive long enough to solve the mystery of your own past. Can you break the chains of destiny, or will you let them bind you to your doom? Incarnate is currently being developed in collaboration with a yet-to-be-announced studio.

    Prey 2
The follow up to “Action Game of the Year” (PC Gamer), reprise your role as Tommy, the native warrior who saved Earth from alien invasion in Prey. This time, abandoned and framed for the disappearance of his family and girlfriend, Tommy escapes an Earth that no longer wants him for a future that cannot survive without him. Building on the mind-bending portal and gravity-defying gameplay of the original with several innovative new twists, Prey 2 promises to once again take players into a compelling science-fiction world with breathtaking visuals and adrenaline-pumping action gameplay. Prey 2 is currently being developed in cooperation with Human Head studios and slated for Xbox 360 and PC platforms.

Zenimax -- who owns both BethSoft and Id Software -- purchases the rights to the Prey IP.

id Owner ZeniMax Obtains Prey Rights

Prey

ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Doom creator id Software and Fallout 3 developer Bethesda, has now acquired the rights to the gravity-bending Prey shooter franchise.

While the company has yet to make an official statement, superannutation dug up a document that shows Radar Group transferring ownership to ZeniMax in July, backing up an overlooked report from Duke4.net. More recently, ZeniMax registered the Prey trademark under video games, books, movies, and television shows.

The first Prey (PC, X360) made it to stores in 2006 care of Human Head, which had worked with then-property owner 3D Realms on the long-in-development project. A sequel was later announced by Radar Group--a so-called entertainment incubator formed by 3DR exec Scott Miller--but nothing has been said since. Going by the USPTO, Radar handed the rights to ZeniMax within a month of getting them from 3DR.

Blah, open world

That means:

-bad controls
-repetitive missions
-glitches and bugs ("open world jank")

The only exception to this (that I've played) has been Assassin's Creed. Fucking open world games trade all the polish for the ability to cause random mayhem, which gets boring after 5 minutes anyway.

Why the fuck are they calling this game Prey 2? It's not like the name has a big following, it wasn't that great of a shooter. This sequel is sounding nothing like the first, just make something new.

Yeah, that's kind of weird.  But everyone knows that any established name, even a somewhat obscure one, seems somehow more appealing to the suits.  Honestly, the idiots would probably take Daikatana 2 over a new IP if you gave them the option.

As awesome as Prey 2 sounds, I really wish Tommy was in the game as the main character.

Is the "death-walking" mode in Prey 2 again?

GameSpot -> RUMOR - Prey 2 might have gotten cancelled; BethSoft says "No Comment" on the rumor...

Quote
Prey 2 may never see the light of day. Dutch site PSFocus is reporting that multiple reliable sources have told it the game has been cancelled by publisher Bethesda Softworks.

When contacted by GameSpot, a Bethesda representative said the company had no comment on the report.

Bethesda Softworks first announced that it had enlisted developer Human Head to create the first-person shooter sequel last year. A trio of Prey 2 presentations had been scheduled for this month's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, but those were cancelled by Bethesda prior to the event.

Same here.
It doesn't look good, though - given what we know, so far [the pulling of the presentations from GDC and the BethSoft "no comment" response]...
Let's hope it doesn't/didn't get canned.

If it does, I hope the Prey IP owner sells it and someone finishes it up...

Bethesda says Prey 2 is NOT cancelled.
Delayed until AT LEAST 2013.

Quote
Bethesda has announced that, contrary to fears, Prey 2 will NOT be canceled. However, it has admitted that development did not go according to plan and, as a result, the Blade Runner-esque sequel will miss its projected 2012 release window.

"Development of Prey 2 has not been cancelled but the game will not be released in 2012 as planned," said the company. "The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards. Prey 2 has shown great promise and we regret disappointing our fans.

"We have made a substantial investment in game development to deliver the experience fans want. We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule.

Linking again so people don't miss this. Human Head hasn't been working on the game since November.
Quote
According to a Shacknews source who asked not to be identified, Human Head was not happy with the terms of its contract with ZeniMax, and deliberately stopped work on the game in November so it could try to negotiate a more favorable deal. While doing that, many on the development team were laid off, with the hope they would be rehired if the contract issue was resolved favorably. The process seemed to be gathering some positive momentum until January when ZeniMax's responses all but stopped, causing some of the laid-off Prey 2 team to wonder if the game would ever see the light of day.

By March 1, the source said, things had progressed a bit, leaving the Prey 2 team hopeful that they would return to work soon. But that quickly soured the following day. The source could provide no further first-hand details after March 2.
Sounds like HH was dropped and now Prey 2 is going to be given to someone else. This also explains HH hinting at wanting to make a new Rune.

Wonder how much this will change what Prey 2 will end up being.

IGN -> "What Went Wrong With Prey 2?"
This is pretty much about the differences b/t Human Head Studios and Bethesda over how Prey 2 was turning out -> funding issues; contact disputes; and BethSoft trying to buy HH out.
