Earth Day
« on: Sunday, April 22, 2007, 10:03:29 AM »
Did anyone know (or care) that it was Earth day today?

I like the idea, but isn't everyday Earth day? I mean considering we're pretty much restricted to the planet.

If I don't get the day off, I don't care...but I don't have a job so I wouldn't care anyways.

We saw people doing stuff around town.  We didn't do anything.  Julia and I are both kinda' enviro-friendly and such, but the whole Earth Day thing always seemed worthless to me.

I only knew it was Earth Day because the Science and Discovery channel have been throwing out advertisements about special Sunday showings of Earth Day programs, some of them look pretty cool, but I'll be at work soon and will miss most of them.

Also has anyone been watching Planet Earth on Discovery Channel?  It is a pretty awesome miniseries so far, completely shot in HD, so it looks really nice, took 4 or 5 years to make it and you can see the work that went into it.  They showed this super slow motion shot of a crocodile taking down a wildebeast by the water, pretty fucking cool.

Planet Earth looked awesome, but we haven't really managed to catch it yet.

I would have had no idea  today was earth day if one of my friends hand't mentioned it last night.  I celebrated by sleeping most of the day.

It was made by the BBC, and is now being re-broadcast by the Discovery Channel. The narrator is David Attenborough.

And that slow-motion scene you're talking about isn't even the cool one.

That, er, was a seal.

The discovery channel version is narrated by sigourney weaver.  I agree though, the two ultra slow motion shots of the great whites are possibly the most amazing thing I have ever seen on TV.

For the record, those are two different images from the same sequence, in which a shark ambushes a seal from below and leaps completely out of the water.
