I was just reading that and thought of something. You know how our sun, not long before it burns out, is supposed to grow so large it swallows several planets including Earth? Assuming we are never able to leave Earth and colonize another planet, other potentially advanced civilizations from other worlds would never even know we existed except for maybe a couple of satellites we sent way out into space. Kind of sad to think about.

Any number of things could extinguish the biosphere much sooner than that. I used to think we'd someday find our way to other habitable planets, but I don't anymore. I think humanity as a species is too flawed for sustained technical evolution and vision of that magnitude. Plus it may be physically impossible to cross the amount of space it would take.

I wonder how many species have matured to civilization and died out already.

That's really cool, but by the time our red giant sun wipes out more than half the solar system, I think we will have already wiped ourselves off the face of the earth long ago or some other outside source, like a large asteroid, will. Sometimes I wish our sun was big enough to become a black hole, but it will only become a small white dwarf when it dies. I think we might be able to make it Mars (Mars will get wiped out by our red giant sun too though) and possibly other planets but never a planet as far as 581c.

Imagine if intelligent life contacts this planet. It would make such a massive thinking on our way of lives and thinking. Heck people might even stop killing each other...

I wonder if there's some sort of life on this planet, that would be cool... not that we'd ever find out in our life times. But man what would we do if we found (inteligent) life out there that'd be so cool.

If Aliens did contact earth some way, I seriously don't think it would change a damn thing. People are too selfish and stupid.

And I would guess humans will die out long before our sun dies.

I too am pessimistic about the fate of mankind. And if we found aliens, I think most people would freak out and it would actually make things worse, not better.

I'd love to see what people would do if we had proof of alien life. It will be a long time before we could see anything on this new planet though. I hope the new surveying techniques shows earth-like planets to be the norm instead of the exception. If that's the case we could be finding a lot more soon.
