Problems with PS1 disks in PS2.
« on: Thursday, April 26, 2007, 07:39:03 AM »
Anybody know anything about this off the top of their head?  For some reason my PS2, which plays PS2 games without issue, is having tons of trouble reading PS1 disks.  Always worked before, but in the last year or so they just won't read.  They're all in fine shape, the thing just refuses to read them like 9 out of 10 times.  Takes forever, but if you re-seat the disk enough times you can generally get it to work.  I just don't know anything about console hardware.  Any idea why this might be happening?  I'm sure I could find something via Google, but I'm about to take off for work and wanted to put this out there before I forgot to check myself later... and figured if anybody happens to know something maybe I could figure out a way to get things back to normal.  Julia still plays a lot of PS1 games, so it would be good to not have the thing busted.

No idea, but disc read errors are extremely common in older PS2s.  In fact I'm pretty sure there was a class-action lawsuit about it some time ago.  I have one of the original PS2s.  I have no idea how I missed out on the suit.

PS2 discs are DVDs and PS1 discs are CDs.  They're read differently with the same optics and motor.  My guess is that age has affected the ability of the system to track CDs but not DVDs yet.  Stop me when you think I'm Captain Obvious.  Can you play music CDs in the thing?  Movie DVDs?

Ever clean the lens?

Ever clean the lens?

This man speaks the truth, I have a launch PS2 and when I started getting disc read errors on some discs, especially PS1 games, I opened the system up and cleaned it out throughly with some compressed air, but mostly I concentrated on taking a cotton swab and gently cleaning the lens.  It has worked fine ever since then.

It's probably a problem with the laser focusing in order to read cds.  If it is a mechanical problem like that the shitty thing is that it also could mean that it might have problems with dual layer dvds, since the laser has to refocus there as well to read the second layer.

But seriously, try cleaning it....that seems like the best bet if you haven't run into problems before.

Julia's cleaned it twice, she said, but not opening it up... just with one of those CDs with the brush on it to clean the lens.  Can a lens just deteriorate?  I've got no problem with PS2 games or movie DVDs.
