Cool read.  Deus Ex was a completely awesome game and it's interesting to see a bit of the backstory. 

That Harvey Smith guy is a tard though.  DX2, his baby, was spectacularly terrible.  Spector needs to stop kissing his ass and talk about how Harvey Smith's "vision" badly soiled the DX name.

If I recall, Spector didn't want to really do a DX2, which is why he put Smith in charge. It sounded like even he was not really "overlooking" the game, but just saying "Ahem, whatever...." hehe.

But, as we all know, Spector now wants the DX license back....I think he wants to bring back the DX name, back to greatness, myself....

Yeah, me neither.

We always knew it took a good deal of time to develop this and that it was delayed a few times, but now we know why -- Spector had field days, it looks like, trying to get everybody to be on the same page!!!

I wonder if what he mentions happens often in the industry -- where you have a bunch of people on your game development team and some of them dislike each other, so they don't communicate about things, sometimes get into arguments w/ others, etc etc.

Given all that, it seems quite amazing that the game turned out to be a masterpiece.

My most favorite level in the world is Hong Kong in Deus Ex, everything about it is amazing. Theres tons of tunnels, secrets, doors, apartments, rooms and all around coolness to be seen. One of my favorite things about that level (this shows how easily impressed I am) is when you're in that giant, corporate skyscraper and you can see about 50 stories down onto the Hong Kong street. The street is also left just how you left it before you went into the skyscraper.

Harvey Smith is the man who's been at the heart of production of Midway's forthcoming game BlackSite, but once upon a time he worked alongside Warren Spector at Ion Storm on a little game known as Deus Ex.

It means his work at Midway isn't his first dalliance with the area in and around Area 51, as it provided quite an integral part of the original Deus Ex - but if Smith had had his way, Area 51 would never have featured in the acclaimed FPS-RPG.

"I didn't want to put Area 51 in Deus Ex!", its illustrious lead designer told PC Zone magazine recently. "I didn't find it that interesting. In fact, initially it was a moonbase. You were going to use the rocket to get to the international space-station (which in our fiction was just sagging and falling apart and barely held together), and from there you were going to use a shuttle to get to a luxury space-station which was going to be like the Titanic.

"From there, you were going to go to the moonbase, where the game was going to end."

And so it was, then, when the decision was made to cut the space-stations, the moonbase where a climactic AI originally dwelt similarly bit the dust, even if the tunnels beneath it would later be re-realised as the winding corridors beneath Area 51.

"It was totally crazy - we finally realised this was an Earth-bound game. Deus Ex was all about moving through an alley and going up a fire escape, then running on the roof so you can get into somebody's apartment...", Smith explained.

Deus Ex proved a shining star amongst PC games, and while the sequel failed to live up to expectations that's by no means dampened enthusiasm for a new outing in the series. News on a new Deus Ex game from Eidos actually slipped out in May this year, but since then we've heard nothing.

Haha those are some pretty funky ideas! I am glad the game turned out the way it did though :) It's DX:IW that I wish was done better overall.

For DX3 I really hope they use either the Source Engine or Unreal Engine 3. I'm leaning more towards Source mainly because it seems like the simpler choice (less development complications). Of course if id Tech 5 is feasible it would make a pretty sweet looking game. I just hope they focus more on the gameplay rather than the cosmetics.

After DX2, Im not sure I could care about another sequel. What would be awesome is if a remake was done with the new unreal engine, I'd be all over that.

Not that it is a very successful problem solver generally, but have you tried using one of the other Windows compatibility modes?

Yeah, the problem is that regularly the game runs too fast.  You can adjust that in an .ini file but it doesn't fix it completely. 

It's hard to explain.

Weird.  I just installed it and completed the training.  Seems fine.  Pretty sweet too.  I'm playing at 1680x1050, w/ 16x anisotropic filtering and 16xQ antialiasing.  It is sharp as a razor.  To bad for the simple geometry and low-res textures.  Still though, running like a dream and looking better than ever.

Strange. I have that problem with Painkiller! The game runs like it's on Fast Forward, and I have to manually limit the frames or force it to sync to 60Hz in order for it to run normally.

By the way I've played Project Snowblind.. Apparently the rumour is true, it was originally being developed as Deus Ex 2.. The game is way too similar to be a coincidence.

I've updated my hardware since the last time I installed this game, so I figured I'd give it another go round.

Plays flawlessly.  VERY fun too.

I hope this mod turns out good -- b/c the trailer was pretty kick-ass.
I'll reinstall DE for this thing.

This sounds more like what DE fans been waiting for to me -- not what Eidos had planned for their upcoming DE3.

Sorry to bring this old thread back, but I'm actuall playing this game now and got past the first few missions.  This time I seem to be into it a bit more and am pretty impressed so far.  Amazing how it's still fun with the shitty 90's era fps interface.

I take it you played through it when it first came out?  I didn't play PC games at the time and only bought it off steam with IW for $5 in some sale within the last 6 months.   I tried playing on my PC but couldn't get into it and ended up fucking around with all the graphical mods.  My laptop sucks for games (fuck you x3100 and vista combo) but I was bored and downloaded it off Steam again.  I won't even try to run any of the graphical mods, but vanilla is pretty fun this time around.

Hong Kong was just a freakin' blast. I love the energy sword you find there.

Visiting so many countries in this bleak future is part of what I loved so much about the game.

Yeah, that was one of its best features. Each locale had a very distinct feeling and ambiance.

By contrast, in Invisible War all the environments felt the same, there wasn't much variety in the design or the style.

On DE:IW - Unified ammo; poor consolized interface; and poor in-game performance on PC's when it came out were what ruined Deus Ex: Invisible War.

If any modders out there wanna fix those issues, we'd have a really good game.

I am looking forward to Deus Ex: Human Revolution, though.

I had to throw this link up there, since Deus Ex was great AND that the series is dirt-cheap on Steam.

I believe that's the same DX10 renderer I used when first trying to play through the game when I bought it off Steam for like $2.50 during some sale at the start of the year. If I remember correctly, it did end up looking better, but I had some problem with it..not sure what it was.   I've recently been actually playing through the game fully on my laptop, and I don't even want to try this....it's amazing how much Intel integrated graphics suck ass.

What does the GOTY edition have?  Is it just the fully-patched version with the multiplayer?  I used to have a GOTY disc, but I don't know where it is now.  However, I found my original copy and installed it the other day to try out the DX10 engine (see other thread).  It didn't ask for a key and took the newest patch no problem.

I made an ISO of it because it was pretty scratched up.
