Gas Powered Games' Next RPG to be published by Sega
« on: Thursday, May 10, 2007, 02:22:50 PM »
Chris Taylor and Gas Powered Games have been working on a new PC RPG, yet it's still unknown what it is.

Though, now we know this -- Sega will publish whatever is it.

Quote
Now, the publisher (Sega) is prepping an all-new, as-yet-unnamed PC RPG with Redmond, Washington-based Gas Powered Games, developer of the critically acclaimed Supreme Commander. However, the companies had nothing to reveal other than the title's existence and their enthusiasm for working with each other.

"Sega is continuing its march forward in building a strong western developed portfolio of games," said Sega of America and COO Simon Jeffery. "Partnering with well-established and visionary game creators such as [Gas Powered founder] Chris Taylor and his talented group at Gas Powered Games aligns perfectly with our strategy."

I am glad Chris found a publisher. He seems like such a nice guy and is really passionate about his games. I've spoken to him on e-mail after I wrote the Dungeon Siege review.

He basically spent all his life savings on the development of Dungeon Siege and was in the red when it was released. Thankfully it was a hit, but I am sure the reason behind DS2 being such a disaster was that Taylor was still trying to milk the DS engine.

Reminds me a bit of the Freedom Force sequel. The fact that they were doing a sequel had me excited because I was looking forward to them doing 80s or 90s of the comic books. Unfortunately they chose to go even further back. Reason was they wanted to recycle the engine, and juice it for all it was worth. It happened with the second Splinter Cell game as well.

I liked the original DS in many regards, yet I liked DS2 in many regards. Though, many of the things I liked about the original DS, they broke in DS2 -- such as the save system and the removal of the formation system.

Though, I did prefer DS2: Broken World over DS2: Original -- boy a good amount, actually. Especially since they added new hot-keys for formations (yay!), a few quests that have multi-solutions, the story was much better and darker, there were new classes, new loot galore, and the new NPC characters rocked.

I never finished DS1.
Never began Arranna expansion, either.

FF rocked -- awesome game.

Still yet to play FF Vs. 3rd Reich.
I should get it, since it's like $10, these days and age -- if you can find it.

Chris Taylor should stick to RTS games.  I think it's been sufficiently proven that his forays into the RPG realm are all laughable and worthless, having been surpassed by their predecessors before they were even released.  I really like the guy on a personal level, he just needs to stick to what he's good at.

I don't even know who Chris Taylor is.  What RTS games did he make?

Dungeon Siege at the time it was released was a top quality hack and slash. The team AI was amazing etc. I think Cobra can testify to that.

However that was about all the game was good at, and I was sure Dungeon Siege 2 would build on the first with a lot more roleplaying and a well fleshed out world. I was wrong.

He should stick to RTS games. He does them really well.

Dungeon Siege was boring, automated crap, but to each his own.  I fell for DS2 as well even after that just because at the time there was nothing else I was playing and it looked pretty.  It was, at least, slightly more fun, but the experience was pretty bad on the whole.
