Serious Sam 3
« on: Sunday, May 13, 2007, 01:25:14 PM »
Looks like Croteam's busy....

Looks like Serious Sam 3 might be announced soon.

Also, looks like Croteam's also workin on a tactical/action shooter on the Serious 3 Engine.

Serious Sam 3 Announcement Soon? [May 13, 2007, 2:20 pm ET] - Viewing Comments

Seriously! has word that the next print issue of GamePlay magazine will feature an extensive interview with Croteam that will reveal a couple of new projects. Though the GamePlay Website only offers a cover image mentioning the interview, according to their source (who is named, though his bona fides are unspecified) the article in the Croatian publication will offer "images of Serious Sam 3, Serious Engine 3, and Croteam's next project." This "next project" is described as a modern-day military tactical/action shooter using the serious 3 engine, possibly the project hinted at by Croteam in December '05 (story).

Bah I disliked the first that I bought. It isn't a knock against anyone else, they just weren't my cup of tea. I found Painkiller far more appealing. But with everyone jumping on the console bandwagon, it is nice to see some alliances remain.

I never played SS2, I gave the demo a run through but that was about it. Was it any good?

For some reason it all looks like it is made out of paper.

You're right.  At first glance it looks real nice.  But there is just something about the screenshots that's... off.

The building on the left in the first image looks like one of those false buildings they use on a movie studio backlot - you know the ones where its just the face of the building nothing else?

I liked SS a lot.  I played the demo of SS2 and really didn't like it.

Doesn't seem like anybody liked SS2 much.  I didn't even try it.

No, they are working on two different games. This tactical shooter will use Serious Engine 3, and eventually I suppose they will Make Serious Sam 3 on it as well.

Ah ok sweet hehe I like the Serious Engine.. Honestly I felt the Serious Sam games were more like demos of the engine than complete games.

Que will vehemently confront me on that point, but I stand by my opinion :P

I already told you I didn't even play SS2.  Though I do disagree with you on the two SS1 games.  I wasn't the biggest fan in the world, but they were extremely enjoyable when I was in the mood.

Hehe yeah I know, but the first two SS1 games aren't far from SS2. I appreciate the games in terms of engine and technical quality. I'm just never in the mood to be raided by endless hordes of freakish monsters. Probably why I didn't enjoy Painkiller either, although equally I respect it.

How could you not want to be raided by hordes of monsters?  I think you need a shrink.

Hehe I don't know, somehow I prefer sitting on a ledge and picking them off from a distance wif me Riper Snifle! Alternatively I also don't mind sneaking up on them and slitting their monstrous throats.

I liked Painkilled because of the visuals, but those sort of shooters are just mindless to me. I don't find it fun, and my brain just shuts down.

In general, any kind of monster generator irritates me.. Whether it's an action game or RPG. That was actually one of the main reasons I quit playing Ninja Gaiden on Xbox. It just got too annoying.

Respawning enemies suck. I hated that about Soldier of Fortune 2. I cleared that damn oil tanker a 100 times yet they kept respawning.

Painkiller rocks.

There's a place for shooters like Painkiller and any of those non-stop-action RPG's that happen to be all hack-n-slash, when they're done correctly.

I agree completely, but if I remember correctly only like 10% of the enemies in Ninja Gaiden respawned.  There was like 3 areas that you could gain a ton of essence from leaving the room and walking back in.  There were quite a few more that would when you left the entire area and came back, but it wasn't that bad compaired to some games.  This is the original version I'm thinking about though, no idea about NG:Black.

shoot shoot shoot, reload, shoot.  Run run run shoot shoot shoot, reload, run, shoot, switch guns.  Shoot! run run run run.  Strafe!

Fun every once in a while, but there's a reason the 'horde of monster' game style kind of died off once computers were capable of running more complex AI

Except that it hasn't, which is plainly obvious if you take a look at the gaming landscape.  Plenty of us still love to just kill things in mass quantities.

Oh, I'm not saying it has died off completly, but rather that it has just slowed down.  It's sort of a niche withen the fps genre.

I guess, but you have to consider all the games outside of the FPS genre, too.

Thats still like every FPS ever made, only now the enemies step to the side every once in a while and there are fewer of them.

Yes, there's numerous Action/RPG's which are "kill things till there's no end, such as Titan Quest (plus expansion + the entire Diablo series.

I played SS:TSE.  I had fun with it for awhile, but then it just became impossible.  I got to this part where I must have played it twenty times and just couldn't get past.

I liked SS a lot.  I played the demo of SS2 and really didn't like it.

I was fine with it, until I got to the platforming.  I never liked that in the SS1 games, but at least it wasn't too terribly bad.  They took that to intense frustration in the demo, and I really wanted no part of it.  So I've never played the full game either.

Any FPS/shooter that does "platforming" -- like say HL1, Tron 2.0 -- the game better have an option 3rd person camera hotkey to switch to while on the fly.

I'm so much better in 3rd person when doing "platforming" than in 1st.

Seriously! (Serious Sam fan site) has scans from some Czech mag that show off a bunch of screens from the Serious Engine 3 tech demo. It looks really damn good.

Some of those textures and models in the screenshots don't look too great, the tank looks pretty crappy especially.  I see a bunch of texture stretching and parts where the texture unrealistically overlaps onto an edge from the side, these are early screenshots though.  I, like Que, enjoyed playing the Serious Sam games when I was in the mood to just mow down hordes of enemies.

I had mixed feelings on Serious Sam. On the surface I hated it. The egyptian locale seemed really boring to me, and the style lent itself to big rooms with no clutter/detail. A lot of the enemy designs were just bad. Man I really hated those ones witht he big shoulders, the blatant Looney Tunes ripoff:

I'd heard people say it was a throwback to Doom (along with Painkiller), but the annoying thing about these newer ones is that they just continue spawning tons of monsters. Doom had a lot, but they didn't put you in a room/courtyard with dozens of monsters spawnign at you, then have you sit there killing them all for 5 minutes straight. On to the next room, for antoher 5 minutes of monster spawns.

OK I'm going in a different direction that I meant to. My point is that despite the simple nature and (in the case of SS) simple/uninspired art design, they're fun games to just open and blast some bad guys for a little bit. No other FPS are as "pick up and play" as these 2.

I actually liked the Egyptian theme, but then thats always been an interest of mine. The monster designs were dopey, but they had a child-like charm to them. I wouldnt change the harpies, headless bomb guys, or the bulls for anything.

They were just fun games.

I agree with your "Doom like" rant, though. Doom had lots of things to kill, but Painkiller and Serious Sam aren't really like Doom at all. Not saying that style isn't fun, but to say its "like Doom" is actually kind of insulting to what Doom did. People aren't remembering what Doom was really like to play. It was more than a killbox.

I like ancient Egyptian stuff, but it didn't do much for me in the context of the first game.  2nd encounter was better for me theme-wise.  I also agree that the Doom comparisons were strange.  But yeah, both games were a ton of fun.

As an Egyptian I'm inclined to love Ancient Egyptian themes! :D But yeah, it didn't really fair well in SS. It didn't help sugar-coat the montony of the game either.

I hate monster generators, or endless spawns of monsters, with the exception of certain segments in games. Anyway such modes are only ever fun in coop scenarios i.e. L4D survival or end-chapter cascades.

The monsters were freakin' weird in SS!! WTF were they?!
