Deus Ex 3 is already in development.
« on: Thursday, May 17, 2007, 05:06:56 PM »
Deus Ex 3 -- expect to hear more about it, soon. Already in the works.
And it ain't by Warren Spector's Junction Point studio, either.

Remember, Eidos owns the IP, currently...
So, Eidos' new Eidos Montreal studio is already working on Deus Ex 3

Eidos Confirms Next Deus Ex
The new Eidos Montreal studio is reviving the action RPG.
by Daemon Hatfield

US, May 17, 2007 - In a recent interview on French-language television station MusiquePlus the director of Eidos France, Patrick Melchior, revealed a new Deus Ex game is in the works. The revival of the franchise is the "first mission" of Eidos' new Montreal studio, currently made up of around 40 people.

Deus Ex is an action RPG series created by Warren Spector and Ion Storm and originally released by Eidos in 2000. The game received a sequel, Deus Ex: Invisible War, in 2003, but since then the series has been dormant. Ion Storm shut its doors in 2005, and Warren Spector is working on a game with his new Junction Point Studios. Details on this revival are not clear at this time, but Melchior says we can expect to hear more about the next Deus Ex game in a few months.

As of this writing, Eidos could not be reached for comment.

I'm not really sure if I like this news or not, since I'd probably prefer Spector's Junction Point to making this -- since Ion Storm began it, which included Spector. I think if anything, they can bring possibly break another great DX game out.

Though, since Eidos is already working on this DX3, I really just hope Eidos can actually churn out a good Deus Ex game. I hope they will not destroy what made the original DX so great like say DX: IW did in the gameplay department.

Okay, what does everyone think of this news????

I don't have any confidence in anything Eidos does anymore.  While I'd love to hold out hope that this new studio could pull a good DX3 off, I just don't see it happening.

Ditto

I loved the first game but I didn't get past the demo of DX2 - so their going to have to work to get my interest back.

hmm... i can't say that i'm not interested. i'd rather it was in the hands of spector, as i'm sure every other sane person would, but anything approaching deus ex in anyway *could* be destined for greatness.

just how much do we know about this development team? D, can you dig anything up?

Nothing much is known yet. We do know that this Eidos Montreal division by Eidos is brand new, actually.
Who is on this team and who these employees worked for before and what games that worked on, not yet known.

We know Patrick Melichor, who is Eidos' France Director, was the one who let the cat out of the bag

Quote from: GameSpot
This week, though, came word that the Deus Ex series is being revived. In an video interview with MusiquePlus, Eidos France director general Patrick Melichor revealed that a new game in the series was in the works at the British publisher's recently formed Montreal, Canada, studio. "The first mission for the team will be to bring back to life an extraordinary title called Deus Ex," said the well-groomed Melichor. The executive also revealed that some 40 developers would be committed to the project.

The official story: US Eidos reps wouldn't comment on the Melichor interview. However, he himself gave the Deus Ex project revelation a major caveat. "We're still waiting for final confirmation [on the new Deus Ex], which should happen in the next few months," said Melichor.

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus that a new Deus Ex has been officially been announced. Not bogus that it's looking very likely.

Yeah; that's all we can do....is see what happens.

I dunno', but I think I might rather have Spector's company doing it than Eidos -- especially since he really wants his franchise back.

So, for the Deus Ex brand-name's sake, let's hope Eidos' Montreals pulls it off...

Yeah, Spector and his team have the experience with Deus Ex so they have that advantage. Though I think Eidos are testing the Tomb Raider theory: shift the project to a new developer and it will be revitalized.

Well, its success depends on how much they allow the game to be successful.  I mean the fact that they've kept it away from Harvey Smith is a great thing, but I think that Harvey was also under a lot of pressure from Eidos to make it more accessible to console gamers.  He just took it a little too far.

Plus they wasted valuable time making their own engine.  I think it was based on the Unreal engine but they replaced all the major modules with their own.  Their engine was horrible.  Tiny levels and poor performance with even the beast rigs of the day.  Plus the ginormous, un-PC-like text and blurry textures.  Many people made high-res texture packs and found ways to shrink the text which improved these issues, but then load times were really bad.  As small as the levels were, this was not necessarily an improvement at all.

Hopefully, that doesn't happen with DX3.

Agreed on that.

Yes, it was on a HEAVILY modified Unreal 2.0 Engine -- the biggest modification to it was that they added their own Lighting system.

I should note, having the Lighting and Bloom graphical options turned on was the biggest framerate killers on the PC version of the game. The game really looked like junk w/ them off or turned down low, though -- though, the framerate was drastically better.

I guess I'm with most other people with Deus Ex = one of my all time favorites and Deus Ex: 2 = Such a disappointing load of crap.

Don't have much hope for this one, but maybe I'll pleasantly surprised, which I hope happens.

Fun Fact:  Project Snowblind was in development as Dues Ex 3: Clan Wars up until the fans reacted negatively to Dues Ex 2.  I think it was more of an online thing though (from the name).

Anyways, I haven't played much of either game, but wasn't Specter involved with Dues Ex 2 as well?  If so, then it's probably not a bad idea to hand it to another team.  You know which team at Eidos rocks?  Crystal Dynamics...fuck I want another Kain game.

Hahah no wonder that game felt like a "good" Deus Ex 2! It was linear though.

Crystal Dynamics are awesome. I think it's time a new Kain game was announced :D

Oh, and Tomb Raider Anniversary is awesome. For anyone who played the original TR, you'll have a lot of memory-jerking moments. It's a well done mix of nostalgia and freshness!

Eh... I think Crystal Dynamics is kind of not that amazing.  I mean, I love the Kain games, don't get me wrong, but they've also done some less than stellar work, and the Kain games have had some fairly bad moments too.  That said, yes, I would totally be okay with them making another even despite the fact that I haven't even started Defiance.

It's true they've had their ups and downs. Crystal Dynamics does have the experience though.

I still remember their old logo from games like Gex, back in the days of the Panasonic 3DO, or even Pandemonium on the Saturn and PSX! I don't why, I like it so much more than their new logo.

Yeah, he was.  But DX2 was Harvey Smith's vision whereas DX was Warren Spector's vision.  The scary thing is that Spector defended a lot of Smith's design choices in DX2, like he fixed some of what was "wrong" with the original DX.

I don't know if Spector's statements were just to try to refrain from putting a negative spin on DX2 and therefore hurting game sales or if he actually believed what he said.  I'm really hoping it was the former.

Yeah, I was confused by some of his reasoning i.e. the reason for unified ammo.

Or maybe there's a conspiracy theory that Spector didn't want to take charge of DX: IW b/c he knew Harvey Smith couldn't do as good as a job as Spector in the lead chair, so that when time for a DX3 came along to be made, Spector could be in the lead chair to try and bring "The Deus Ex IP back to greatness." ;)

So much for that happening, since Eidos owns DX Property now.... ;)
