My 360 is scratching game discs
« on: Friday, May 18, 2007, 12:30:03 AM »
Yea. Well remember when I complained about Lost Planet not being able to read, and after checking the disc there were scratches. Its happening to the other two games. I checked these discs before I played them and they looked good. GoW I got one read error, I take it out and notice a few scratches, really obvious scratches that I should have noticed otherwise. Now Im playing Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Ive gotten two so far. I just checked the disc and now it looks like its scratched to hell. No way it was like that before I started playing it. So yea... more 360 bullshit I get to deal with.

Did you move your 360 while the disc is inside the console?  My friend did that and the disc was nearly destroyed.  :P

Anyway, I think I've heard of this issue before.  You're gonna have to go get it fixed, or get a new system.

Man, your 360 seems to be filled with nothing but problems. Mine hasn't done anything odd at all... it hasnt even froze up on me yet.
Suck it, Pugnate.

Swap Keebler's elite with your own. But yea, from what I understand it is an issue with certain owners.

Hmm, mine freezes from time to time.  I attribute it to low battery life on my controller though.  It seems prone to freeze when my controller is low on battery.

If you rotate the 360 in any way other than on the disc's spin axis (while it's spinning) the gyroscopic force could cause it to bang the disc surface against something, like the optical pickup assembly.  If you've ever played with a gyroscope, it will be obvious why.

Sorry about your problems.  My system has worked fine so far, and I use a wired controller (by deliberate choice).  I've heard about the scratching issue too.  You're not alone.

So far I have been babying the hell out of my 360, due to the problems I had with the first one I got. So now, I haven't even been touching it while the console is even on. I can clean the scratches off easy enough and when I put the game back in it'll work again. However it would be awesome if it didn't feel like torturing game discs at all.

I have problems with mine too.  I get a disc read error about once every 15 times I play it and it's locked up a couple of times.  Unfortunately, my mother threw the box away with all of my warranty information in it so I'm basically screwed.

Do you have it upright or lying flat?  I've heard people complain off issues when they have it standing like a tower.  I remember Kasavin at GSpot having issues when he was playing Dead Rising because of that.  Though it might not actually have been because of that.  Sucks, dude.  =T

I think we need a class-action lawsuit.  It's clear that the hardware problems with this thing far exceed what's acceptable.  And to make matters worse, once you swap consoles, using any downloaded stuff you paid for is a special problem, since it's tied to the drive and the console.  I hear you need to be logged into Live to be able to use it, something that isn't required normally (or abnormally, if the failure rate is high enough).  You may be able to get past that by deleting ard re-downloading everything, but still, what a frigging nightmare.

I don't see what difference it makes whether you have it upright or not.  I've heard just as many horror stories from guys who lay it flat.  Mine's upright, and I've used it very heavily since I got it.  Some games have locked up on me, and I think that's a combination of disc reads or seeks failing one too many times and the game's streaming software sucking.  This opinion gets a boost from TDU, where I'll occasionally drive off the end of the road and fall into lala land, when the next chunk doesn't stream in soon enough.  But the game's disc dealings are robust.  Instead of crashing, it goes to a loading screen, and puts me back on the side of the road where I fell off.  I know when I need to get out of the game, then eject the disc and "re-seat" it.  The spin speed will drop dramatically, meaning there's trouble reading it.  When everything's up to snuff, the spin speed is consistently high.  (It sounds like a fan.)

This is cheap hardware, as cheap as they thought they could get away with.  They went too far, and that's why Microsoft's financial picture is reeling, from the cost of warranty repairs.

Well, hopefully they'll learn.  I haven't had any trouble with mine, but at this rate I'm more or less expecting it.  Unfortunately, it's already out of warranty I'm sure, so I'll have to fucking pay for it, and I can't afford that.  I think a class-action suit would be just the thing, really.  I think people like their 360s, and all they want is for them to work reliably.  I don't think that's too much to ask.

I bought a 360 a week ago, and so far 2 out of 3 of my games have been scratched. Test Drive Unlimited now freezes whenever entering the west part of Honolulu. Guitar Hero has some serious scratches too but I haven't tried all the songs yet, so I'm not sure what the extent of the damage is on that one.

Definitely haven't been moving the console at all (I actually read this thread before buying my 360, but figured, nah, it probably won't happen to me).

Does anyone know what Microsoft's policy is on replacing scratched game DVDs?

I remember calling MS about the discs getting scratched, and they said to just return it to the point of purchase. I ended up doing that and explaining the situation at Best Buy and they were cool with replacing the game, so I guess you just have to try that. If the store won't take back the scratched game, then you should just call MS, bitch, and they'll probably send you a new game.

OK, but that doesn't solve your problem with the faulty hardware.  What are you going to do, return it again?  (I would.)

I really want a 360 but threads like this make me really wary of getting one. With that much cash being spent on something I don't want a faulty machine.

Just get one from a reputable place that will exchange it in case of problems.

Yea. I still think the 360 is a great console. There's just so many games you'd be missing out on without it. The problem is with next gen consoles like this and for consoles of the future having more and more hardware advancements and complexities, hardware problems like this will become common, its a reality we're going to need to face. Much like PC's which I'm sure anyone who has extensive experience in building and changing hardware in PCs can attest they have been through hell going through endless amounts of troubleshooting. In the end, like Pug said, the best you can do is to get one from a place that can give you a dependable warranty.

I've built two PCs and just the other day moved my hardware from my first built PC to a new case and I haven't had any real problems at all.  Certainly never had to RMA anything except my ATi Radeon 9800XT, and that was years after I bought it.

But yeah, I know what you're saying.

I think it probably has more to do with companies trying to help their bottom line by building the things far too cheaply.

That's all it is.  If they had used a top-of-the-line DVD drive, you'd never see such problems, or the smaller problems with missed seeks and ability to read less than perfect media.  It doesn't even have to be top quality.  I've never had problems with $25 drives from some reputable brands.  But that's not good enough for the bottom line.  They want DVD drives that cost them $4.  Even pennies will make a difference to them.

Yea cause they are making a loss on everyone 360 sold. Once they move down to a smaller process they can afford to get better drives perhaps.

I managed to "fix" my scratched disks with a bit of toothpaste, some cotton balls, and water. They work like a charm now.

The store also let me exchange my Xbox 360 for a new one, so hopefully this one doesn't have any problems...
