Probably because it had potential and could have been good if they fired the fucking writers. There were elements in the movie that could have been used to good effect, but it just had the absolute worst, most pathetically written, horrendously acted villains of any sci-fi movie I can think of. The concept was fine on the most basic level, but those responsible for the casting and writing don't deserve to work in Hollywood. Or possibly even Burger King.
